When Putin announced the invasion on Russian airwaves at 5:50 a.m. Moscow time, the United Nations Security Council had just convened an emergency meeting.
The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, then urged Putin to put down his tanks.
He said, ‘If an operation is actually being planned, I only have one thing to say from the bottom of my heart,’

Putin dismissed the call, describing the invasion as a’special military occupation’ and claiming that he intends to ‘demilitarize’ and ‘de-Nazify’ the country rather than occupy it.
He demanded Ukrainian soldiers to ‘lay down their arms and return home,’ claiming that Russia could not exist with a ‘continuous danger originating from the territory of Ukraine,’ and that battles between Russian and Ukrainian soldiers were ‘inevitable.’
