Who Is Christa Pike? Age, Crime, Death Sentence & Latest Update

Christa Pike

Christa Pike is a Tennessee death-row prisoner whose case has attracted renewed attention after the state’s attempt to execute her by lethal injection failed on September 30, 2026.

Pike, now 50 years old, was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow Job Corps student in Knoxville. She was 18 when she committed the crime and has spent more than 30 years in prison.

Who Is Christa Pike?

Christa Gail Pike was born on March 10, 1976. She is currently the only woman on Tennessee’s death row, according to the Tennessee Department of Correction.

Her case dates back to January 1995, when Pike, her then-boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp, and Shadolla Peterson were involved in Slemmer’s killing. Christa was later convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

What Did Christa Pike Do?

According to court records, Pike and the other two teenagers took Slemmer to a wooded area near the University of Tennessee Agricultural campus, where Slemmer was attacked and killed.

The crime involved severe physical violence and torture. A pentagram was also carved into Slemmer’s chest, which brought significant public attention to the case at the time. Pike later gave investigators a detailed confession, and a jury convicted her in 1996.

Pike received the death penalty, while Shipp received a life sentence and Peterson pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact and received probation.

Why Was Christa Pike Sentenced to Death?

The Tennessee Supreme Court upheld Pike’s conviction and death sentence. The jury found that the murder involved serious physical abuse and that it was committed to interfere with or avoid lawful arrest or prosecution.

Over the years, Pike’s defence has presented evidence of her troubled childhood, including sexual abuse, as well as her mental health and other mitigating factors.

Pike experienced sexual abuse from a young age and was raped at 11 and again at 17. The latter attack occurred in January 1994, about a year before the murder. She was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) while in prison. Those arguments formed part of later efforts to have her death sentence overturned.

Was Pike Executed?

No.

Tennessee attempted to execute Pike by lethal injection on September 30, 2026, but the procedure failed.

Officials administered a first dose of pentobarbital, but it failed to produce the intended result. They then administered a second dose, which also failed. Pike survived the execution attempt and was taken to a hospital.

Her lawyers later said she was unconscious and on a ventilator in critical condition. As of October 5, her attorney said it was still unclear whether she would regain consciousness.

What Happens to Christa Pike Now?

Pike’s legal team is again asking Tennessee to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment following the failed execution.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has halted executions in the state for the rest of 2026 and ordered an independent review of what happened during Pike’s execution attempt.

For now, Pike remains in critical condition in hospital, while her lawyers, state officials and courts consider what comes next.
