The National Communications Authority has clarified that the Ghana Card remains the only ID for SIM Card registration. This clarification seeks to debunk an earlier claim made by Hon. Sam George, the MP for Ningo-Prampram.
In a social media post on Saturday, November 5th, the lawmaker claimed that the NCA had “finally” directed the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to accept the Voter’s ID for the registration.
Hon. Sam George is one who is seen been seen lobbying the Communication Ministry and relevant stakeholders to amend the guidelines for the process.
In response to Hon. Sam George’s claims, the NCA has clarified to debunk the use of voters ID to register SIM cards.
The NCA, however, has dismissed this, stating it is deceptive and not entirely true.
It has been made clear that registration with Voter’s ID is not accepted during the ongoing SIM registration process, with the Ghana Card continuing to serve as the sole acceptable form of identification. You may want to know How to register or link multiple Sim Cards to your Ghana Card.
“The Authority has not issued any such directives to the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) providers.”
“What was rather discussed at a SIM registration technical meeting yesterday was updating the SIM registration App to allow a temporal use of Voter’s ID; that development effort will take several weeks if not months to complete – and the deep dive technical discussions on the integration effort with the MNOs/BWAs have not even been held” the NCA explained in a press statement dated November 5, 2022.
