Celebrities are famous personalities as a result of being genius in their field of endeavor who are admired or considered by many youngsters and even adults as their role models or mentors.
As role models or mentors, social media has paved way for youngsters or adults to reach these celebrities more conveniently. Social media, being it WhatsApp, facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the likes are embodied in the electronic form of media (Electronic media).
News made available has it that the Chinese Government Bans Celebrities from flaunting wealth on social media.
In the early times when social media platforms were introduced, its benefits can broadly be categorised on three dimensions that is communication, marketing and sending information across to a larger population.
In terms of communication, it enhanced interaction with friends and families across long distances.
On the front of marketing, newly invented products were introduced to the people at relatively cheaper cost. Dissemination of information to a larger population is achieved within the shortest possible time.
I must emphasize that, the social media platforms still serves us with these benefits and for that matter can not be underrated.
Regardless of these benefits, some worrying concerns have been raised by users bordering posting of nude pictures, brandishing of weapons, unnecessary display of wealth etc. and has caught the attention of governments all over the world.
Government of every nation acts as a parent figure to its citizens in order to put right certain anomalies when necessary.
In view of this, the Chinese government together with its cyberspace Adminstration after thorough investigation on Tuesday November 23, 2021 issued a directive to all celebrities in China not to show off their wealth on social media and deems it banned or prohibited.
The investigation reveals the aforementioned lifestyle of celebrities to having detrimental effect on the youths.
Why did the Chinese Government Ban Celebrities from Flaunting wealth?
One may disagree with the Chinese government stance and that could be justifiable depending on how you perceive the subject matter.
Again, you will bear with me that, the negative effects of celebrities showing off their wealth on social media far outweighs its positive impacts on the youths.
Most youths upon seeing this on social media feel very despondent because of the thought that, when and how will his or her pittance earnings or stipends help to attain such wealth.
If care is not taken, they might engage in some social vices such as armed robbery, prostitution and the like where they believe will fetch them quick and huge amount of money to live wealthy lifestyle.
In some cases, the poor youth may learn to accept their fate and sink further into the morass of poverty.
In furtherance, the will power to be financially successful by admirers or mentees (youths) might be lost because the hope to achieve financial breakthrough one day might seem unattainable or impossible.
This optimism is lost due to the daily fight for survival.
To wrap up, when the youths are exposed to this lifestyle of celebrities (flaunting their wealth), it could render them powerless and insecured, vulnerable and lack of dignity.Rather than taking decisions for themselves they are subject to the decisions of others in nearly all aspects of their lives.
The unintended damage of the youths caused by celebrities who flaunt their wealth on social media can not be overlooked. All the above listed devastating effects boils down to low self-esteem.
Low self-esteem is when someone lacks confidence about who they are and what they can do.
They often feel incompetent, unloved or inadequate. Low self-esteem is noted as a key factor that creates anxiety, stress, loneliness and increased likelihood of depression.
It causes problems with friendships and romantic friendships, seriously impair academic and job performance, lead to increased vulnerability to drugs and alcohol abuse.
It is therefore necessary that governments all over the world take keen interest in monitoring and restricting the activities of social media users.
As the Chinese Government Bans Celebrities from flaunting wealth on social media, the directive of the Chinese government to ban the celebrities from their oppulence display on social media is appropriate in the right context. It is worth emulating due to the effects of the aforementioned factors.
We are hopeful and forward to see other worrying concerns on social media usage urgently rectified.
