About The Drink

Corona is a Mexican lager brewed by Grupo Modelo. It is exported to over 150 countries. It’s famous for its lime or lemon garnish and iconic crowned bottle. It is named after the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

It’s been the top-selling Mexican and imported beer in the USA since 1988. Known for its classic recipe with the finest ingredients, including pils malt and maize. It’s the “world’s most valuable beer brand”, a title earned over the years.

Composition

The ingredients in Corona Extra include barley malt, corn, hops, yeast, antioxidants like ascorbic acid, and propylene glycol alginate to act as a stabilizer.

The owner/founder of corona

Antonino Fernández Rodríguez, a Spanish entrepreneur, was the founder of Grupo Modelo who manufacture corona beer.

Early Life

Fernández, born in Cerezales del Condado, León, Spain, was the eleventh of 13 siblings. He married Cinia González Díez and spent nearly six decades with her.

Career and Accomplishments

In 1949, Fernández and his wife moved to Mexico. There he began working at Cervecería Modelo, a company founded by his wife’s uncle, Don Pablo Díez.

He started in various roles and eventually became the general manager, overseeing the brewery’s operations. Fernández centered on improving product quality, investing in new equipment, and training Mexican engineers to become brewers.

His leadership saw Cervecería Modelo de Guadalajara constructed, and he coordinated this expansion. This facility was the third in the Grupo Modelo brewery network, with more to come.

In 1971, he became Chairman and CEO of Grupo Modelo. He held this position until 1997. He continued as Chairman until 2005. His nephew Carlos Fernández González succeeded him.

Fernández was also the Honorary Life Chairman of Grupo Modelo until his passing. Throughout his career, he established several companies. Notable amongst them are: Nueva Fábrica Nacional de Vidrio, Cebadas y Maltas, Inamex de Cerveza y Malta, Compañía Cervecera del Trópico, and Industria Vidriera del Potosí.

Awards/Honours

Fernández received military service awards, the Order of Isabella the Catholic from King Juan Carlos I of Spain, and distinctions from various cities in Mexico and around the world. He also received the Medal of Honor from the Casino Español and the Tlamatini Award from the Universidad Iberoamericana.
