NIA NEW GHANA CARD REGISTRATION POINTS OPEN – FEBRUARY 2022

The National Identification Authority (NIA) wishes to inform the general public that it will open new or additional registration points for the Ghana card from Monday21st February 2022 to Tuesday, 31st March 2022.

Location of the Ghana Card New Registration Points 

The points will be at the following locations:

  1. Accra Sports Stadium
  2. El-wak Sports Stadium (Premium Centre), Accra
  3. Kumasi Sports Stadium
  4. Ghana National Fire Service (Regional Office), Cape Coast
  5. Tamale Sports Stadium

When time does the Card Registration start and end? 

These registration points will be open from 8:00 am to 5: 00 pm, Monday to Friday, and will operate alongside NIA’s 276 District and 16 Regional offices, and the Premium Registration Centre at the Headquarters.

Reasons for this Intervention 

This intervention has been instituted in response to growing numbers of Ghanaians thronging NIA’s offices nationwide to register for the Ghana Card, particularly, as the deadline for Sim-Card re-registration approaches. The general public is reminded that house- hold and institutional registration remain open.

Things to Take Note About the Ghana Card (NIA) New Registration Points 

NIA further informs the general public that:

  1. Apart from the El-wak Sports Stadium, which will operate as a Premium Center, registration at all the other locations is free.
  2. Persons who have already registered but have not received their cards are to contact their respective district offices to be issued with their cards and should not attempt to register again as this constitutes an offence punishable by

Ghana Card Registration Requirements – Documents You Need

NIA reminds all prospective applicants that the registration requirements as provided by law remain as follows:

  1. An original copy of a Birth Certificate; or
  2. An original copy of a valid Passport; or
  3. An original copy of a valid Certificate of Acquired Citizenship
  4. Residence’s Ghana Post Digital Address

What Happens if an Applicant does not have any of the above documents? 

Where an applicant does not possess any of the documents specified above, a relative of the applicant who has already registered and issued a Ghana card can vouch for the applicant under oath. Where the applicant has no known relatives, two persons aged 18 years and above and known to the applicant and who have both registered and have been issued with Ghana cards can vouch for the applicant under oath. In this instance, the two persons qualified to vouch for an applicant must fall within the following categories:

  1. A practicing or retired professional teacher (including principals, headmasters & headteachers)
  2. A Gazetted Chief
  3. Practicing or retired Magistrate or Judge
  4. A licensed professional, g., a Medical Doctor, a Nurse, a Lawyer, an Accountant, an Engineer, an Architect
  5. A serving or retired Civil Servant
  6. A serving or retired Public Servant
  7. A serving or retired Clergyman
  8. An Imam
  9. A serving or retired Catechist
  10. A serving or retired member of the Security Services including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Prison Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Bureau of National Investigations, Customs, Excise and Preventive Service of the Ghana Revenue Authority and National Security
  11. A current or past Member of Parliament
  12. A current or past Assemblyman
  13. A current or past member of a Unit Committee

All applicants are expected to come along with their residence’s Ghana Post Digital Address as this is also a mandatory requirement.

About The National Identification Authority, NIA

The NIA was set up in 2003 under the Office of the President with the mandate to issue national ID cards and manage the National Identification System (NIS). This resulted in the passing of the National Identification Authority Act, 2006 (Act 707) to give it the necessary legal premises on which to operate. The National Identity Register Act, 2008 (Act 750) was also passed to give authorization for collection of personal and biometric data and to ensure the protection of privacy and personal information of enrollees/applicants.

Mandate Functions and Powers of NIA

The NIA was established by an Act of Parliament Act 707. It is mandated to register all Ghanaians and legally and permanently resident foreign nationals six years and above under the National Identification System (NIS), create a national database or register, issue them with National Identity Cards (Ghanacards) and manage the use of the database. The Authority is mandated to establish a national data centre and manage a national database, set up a system to collect, process, store, retrieve and disseminate personal data on the population (Ghanaian citizens – both resident and non-resident, and legally and permanently resident foreign nationals), ensure the accuracy, integrity and security of such data, and to issue and promote the use of national identity cards in Ghana. It is also to make data in its custody available to persons or institutions authorized by law to access the data.
