Prof Ransford Gyampo, Secretary of the University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), in his submission for the strike update believes it is inappropriate for any politician to imply that the group’s continuing strike has been called off.
Lecturers, he claims, will not submit to pressure from any source (political) until they believe their demands have been met the way they desire.
On Thursday, UTAG leadership met with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Minister for Education, the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, and the Parliamentary Committee on Education.
According to Peter Nortsu Kortoe, a ranking member of Parliament’s Education Committee, UTAG agreed to stop the strike during the meeting.
According to the reports, UTAG had decided to call off the strike on the condition that the government meet with them right away to discuss Outstanding issues. The minister assured them that they would be committed.
The Legislator noted that the Committee is hopeful that university lecturers will return to lecture halls by Monday, February 21.
But it turns out the strike is still not called off as communicated earlier. Prof Ransford Gyampo insists that no politician can call off the UTAG Strike.
On his his Facebook hlandle, the wrote that “no politician can call off the UTAG strike.”
He added that; “No Sponsored Propagandistic Media Reportage can pressurize anyone. Only members can rescind their decision after they are convinced. If they do, they will communicate.”
