ECG prepaid central database hacked?

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is still trying to fix the technical issue it had with prepaid customers using the E-cash and PNS metering systems. It has been four days since the systems went down on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

“So, what is happening?, Is the ECG prepaid central database hacked?” Some questions being asked. However, the ECG has not yet opened up on the real issues behind this current situation.

Despite the fact that electricity is readily available, many prepaid customers have been forced to spend the night in the dark since they are unable to replenish their accounts or buy prepaid credits to make a connection or get power.

What’s happening?

Internal ECG sources have allegedly revealed that third parties are currently in possession of the prepaid systems’ source codes and are refusing to hand them over to the ECG, implying their central database is allegedly hacked .

Besides a series of announcements explaining the technical difficulty in running the prepaid system without interruption and assuring customers that the company was working “assiduously to rectify the malfunction,” ECG has been silent regarding the alleged cyberattack.

The ECG has reportedly issued a plea for assistance in addressing the issue, and they are now investigating.

National Security and Cyber Security Authority representatives are on-site to assist the ECG in bringing the systems back up.

Also, the ECG is conducting a thorough system audit to determine the root cause of the technical problem that has disrupted service to many of its prepaid clients across the country.
