Prominent preacher and leader of ICGC, Dr. Mensah Otabil, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the National Theatre. He described it as “severely malnourished” due to a lack of proper maintenance.
During the 2023 Experience Conference held at the Maker’s House Chapel on October 1, 2023, he praised Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye, the Founder of Maker’s House Chapel, for constructing state-of-the-art auditoriums.
He contrasted these well-maintained modern facilities with the National Theatre, implying that the state-run venue is in a regrettable state. Dr Mensah Otabil’s statements is an indication that he seems concerned over the current state of the National Theatre
Dr. Otabil pointed out that while private individuals like Dr. Boadi Nyamekye could build and maintain modern auditoriums, the same level of care was not evident in state facilities like the National Theatre. He stressed that this situation was a matter of fact. He insisted that it wasn’t an insult to the government, emphasizing the need to acknowledge the truth.
His remarks have sparked discussions about the National Theatre’s current conditions, which have long been a subject of concern. Playwrights and artists who use the venue have voiced frustrations about inadequate facilities and essential equipment. There have been instances of disruptions during performances, such as power outages, being cited as significant issues.
Prominent figures in the arts industry, including playwright Kobina Ansah, actor Fiifi Coleman, and spoken word artist Oswald Okaitei, have all expressed hope for improved conditions.
