The highest rank is Director-General of Prisons; the rank insignia of the Director-General of Prisons has four symbols and a lapel badge; the official cap of the Ghana Prison Service (GPS) has double laurel leaves and the Ghana Prison Service (GPS) services logo; and the Director-General of Prisons’ rank insignia has four symbols and a lapel badge.

Employers in the Ghana Prisons Service (GPS) have been paid in accordance with the newly implemented Single Spine Salary Structure since 2010. (SSSS).

Furthermore, the Ghana Prison Service (GPS) pays salaries based on rank within the service, so your pay is determined by your rank.

Graduate recruits in the Ghana Prison Service (GPS) also earn more than regular officers with WASSCE or SSCE qualifications.

Personnel in the Ghana Prison Service (GPS) earn on average GHS 1500 per month as a result of the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure.

GENERAL ELIGIBILITY

  • An applicant must be a Ghanaian
  • Must be of good character and without any criminal record Be physically and medically fit by Prisons Service standards
  • Must be between 21 and 30 years by 31 December 2021
  • Must be between 21 and 35 years by 31 December 2021 (for artisans and professionals only)
  • Minimum academic qualification of BECE with at least five/5 passes.
  • Not have been dismissed from any public service or any other employment
  • Must be of a minimum height of 1.68m (5’6″) for males and 1.57m (5’2″) for females
  • Must be able to write and speak English fluently
  • Have an active e-mail account and/or mobile phone number
  • Must be ready to undergo basic Prisons training and other forms of training
  • Must not be bonded.
  • Must be registered with the appropriate professional body and hold a valid PIN (for medical category)

About the Ghana Prisons Service

The Ghana Prisons Service is responsible for the safe custody of prisoners in Ghana, as well as their welfare, reformation and rehabilitation. It is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior.

Functions 

The Ghana Prisons Service has a mandate to perform three main functions. These are:

  • Ensuring safe custody of prisoners and execution of sentences in a humane manner.
  • Ensuring the welfare of prisoners through protection of their rights and providing them with good health care, clothing, bedding, feeding, recreation, and library facilities, among other amenities.
  • Reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners where applicable through the following:
    • Execution of sentences in a humane manner to reduce recidivism (re-offending).
    • Offering opportunities to prisoners to develop their skills through vocational training, moral and formal education.
    • Encouraging public/private participation in the provision of skills training.
