7,000 youth to be employed by Electrochem

Songor Salt Project by Electrochem Ghana Limited

The completion of the Songor Salt Project by Electrochem Ghana Limited in 2024 will result in the hiring or employment of more than 7,000 Ghanaian youth.

Currently at the end of the first phase of the project, 3,000 people have been hired, and by the time the salt concession is fully operational in 2024, another 4,000 will have been hired.

During the opening of Electrochem’s Salt Mine and Processing Plant in Ada, Greater Accra, McDan Group CEO Dr. Daniel Mckorley made the announcement.

After being commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Electrochem will serve as Africa’s primary salt producer.

After years of neglect, the Ada Songor salt concession was leased to McDan Group affiliate Electrochem for 15 years in order to bring it back to its former glory.

After leaving the concession in local hands for over 54 years, the government in 2020 gave the lagoon to Electrochem for development as part of its strategy to diversify the economy through the use of natural resources and public-private partnerships.

Dr. Daniel McKorley stated that the concession was renovated in two years, which would benefit the local community by creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth.

He stated that current salt production stands at 650,000 metric tons, with an increase to one million metric tons in the coming year and two million in 2025.

He added that following the second and final phase, a chemical university would be established to propel Ghana’s industrialization aside the massive employment for the youth.
