Ghanaian hiplife singer, Mzbel in an interview on Joy Prime recounted how KNUST incident during her performance almost destroyed her career.
She disclosed that due to the scandal’s widespread attention, she suffered business setbacks. Mzbel revealed that securing collaborations with companies became challenging. Many shied away from associating with someone perceived as controversial due to negative media coverage.
This adverse impact on her business ventures has deeply affected her, especially when media trends linked to her are predominantly negative. She expressed frustration that even during challenging times, some media outlets portrayed her unfavorably instead of offering support.
Recalling a 2005 incident where she was assaulted by students during a performance at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mzbel highlighted how media coverage, rather than showing sympathy, blamed her attire for the incident. This caused potential business partners, who had initially shown interest in collaborating with her, to lose interest in her.
Mzbel clarified that she doesn’t object to media coverage of scandals involving public figures. However, she urged for more balanced reporting. She claimed this enables artists and herself to engage in lucrative business agreements without fear of backlash.
