About The Kwame Nkrumah University Of Science and Technology, KNUST
The Kumasi College of Technology was established by a Government Ordinance on October 6, 1951, and was succeeded by the University of Science and Technology. It was, however, officially opened on the 22nd of January, 1952, with 200 Teacher Training students transferred from Achimota serving as the nucleus of the new College.
The School of Engineering and the Department of Commerce were founded in October 1952, and the first students were admitted. The School of Engineering only prepared students for professional qualifications from 1952 to 1955. The School began offering courses that led to the University of London Bachelor of Engineering External Degree Examinations in 1955.
With the transfer of the former School of Pharmacy from Korle-Bu Hospital in Accra to the College in January 1953, a Pharmacy Department was established. The Department offered a two-year pharmacy program that culminated in the awarding of the Pharmacy Board Certificate.
In the same year, the Ministry of Agriculture established a Department of Agriculture to provide a variety of ad hoc courses ranging in length from a few terms to three years. A Department of General Studies was also established to prepare students for the Higher School Certificate Examinations in Science and Arts subjects, as well as to provide instruction in subjects that the other departments requested.
