Senegal’s President has declared today as a national holiday to celebrate First AFCON victory

Following Senegal’s victory against Egypt in the African Cup of Nations final, President Macky Sall declared Monday a national holiday to commemorate the country’s first-ever football championship.

Senegal, spearheaded by Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, defeated Egypt’s Mohamed Salah 4-2 on penalties in the Cameroon final on Sunday. Extensive overtime had gone by with no goal.

After two agonizing finals losses, Senegal finally won the Cup of Nations (2002 and 2019).

Sall will adorn the Lions at the presidential palace in Dakar on Tuesday, according to RTS television.

According to RTS, a presidential order has declared a public holiday in commemoration of the Lions’ “great win.”

Cameroon captain, Vincent Aboubakar and Senegal stars, Sadio Mane and Edouard Mendy won awards following the conclusion of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

At the end of the 2021 AFCON, Mane was named Player of the Tournament after leading the Teranga Lions to their first-ever AFCON title on Sunday.

Mendy won the best goalkeeper award as the Chelsea shot-stopper conceded only two goals during 2021 AFCON and blocked a penalty in the shootout against Egypt.

Aboubakar, meanwhile, won the Golden Boot award after scoring a tally of 8 goals in the tournament.
