Manchester United fans are already rubbing their hands together with excitement ahead of Raphael Varane completing his move from Real Madrid this week.
The Frenchman is expected to join imminently and former United defender Rio Ferdinand is just one of those whose mouth is watering at the prospect of watching him line up at Old Trafford.
“He must have wanted to be a part of the new Manchester United way,” Ferdinand said, speaking as if the transfer has already been completed.
“The new project that’s going on, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signing a new deal, [Jadon] Sancho coming in and the talent they’ve got there.
“Playing alongside Maguire after what Harry did at the Euros must have played a part. I think he sees this being a better project than what he’s got at Real Madrid now.”
Moving on to talk about the player United are signing, the former centre-back had no doubts about the Frenchman’s quality.
“He’s played in 14 finals and won 14 finals,” Ferdinand said.
“He’s got the pedigree. Has he got the mentality to win? Yes. He’s done it in a France shirt and in a Real Madrid shirt.”
Focussing specifically on what Varane could bring to Old Trafford, Ferdinand expects him to offer a lot to Solskjaer’s side and to benefit, in particular, defensive partner Maguire.
“He brings pace and he brings an understanding of how to win,” Ferdinand continued.
“He knows how to get it done in the big games. Big games won’t faze this guy.
“He’s got undoubted quality, he’s as quick as they come and he covers people well and I think that’s good for Maguire.”
