Gambia qualifies for their first African Cup of Nations

Gambia

For the first time in the history of Gambia, their football team has qualified for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be held at Cameroon.

Since the start of the Africa Cup of nations’ tournament in Februrary 1957, Gambia has never made it through the qualifiers. However, this year marks greatness for the Gambians as they secure their place in the AFCON 2022. They beat Angola by 1 – 0 at home thereby qualifying them for AFCON 2022. Assan Ceesay was the savior of the team as he score a victorious goal for the team. Gambia joined Ghana, Egypt, Gabon and Comoros in qualifying to the next stage of the competition on Thursday.
Gabon, the Panthers, who lost at the finals in 2019 beat Dr Congo by 3 – 0.  Arsenal’s captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Aaron Boupendza together with Denis Bouanga did the magic for Gabon. Meanwhile, Dr Congo appears to have missed out in the AFCON for the first time in 9 years. The Pharaohs also drew with Kenya, holding scores of 1 – 1. This score secured a place for Egypt in next year’s tournament. Comoros managed with a 0 – 0 draw against Togo on Thursday. First time competitors in next year’s tournament are going to benefit from the expansion from a 16 – team game to a 24-team event.

2022 African Cup of Nations’ tournament promises to be interesting and full of surprises with the introduction of a 24-team event. It is actually going to be a historical one. Comoros for instance who has made it for the AFCON could surprise everyone as their style of play is unknown to most of the teams. Half of the teams who succeeded in qualifying for the tournament are Ghana, Comoro, Egypt, Gambia, Gabon, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Tunisia and of course Cameroon, the host in January 2022’s tournament. We look forward to experiencing a wonderful championship.
