Paul McCarthney Early Life
His dad was absent from McCartney’s birth upon volunteering to fight as a firefighter during World War II. McCartney’s parents were both of Irish descent.
He had his education at the Stockton Woos Road Primary School in Speke from 1947 to 1949. He then transferred to Joseph William Junior School in Belle Vale.
McCartney had the opportunity to attend the Liverpool Institute which was a grammar school rather than a secondary modern school having been one of the three students out of 90 to pass the 11-Plus exam.
In 1954, he met his schoolmate George Harrison who later became known as the lead guitarist for the Beatles whilst on the bus from his home which was suburban of Speke.
Music Career
At the age of 11, McCartney’s father encouraged him to audition for the Liverpool Cathedral choir but unfortunately he was not accepted.
He then moved on to join the St Barnabas’ Church Choir at Mossley Hill. His father gave him a nickel-plated trumpet as a present for his fourteenth birthday but he wanted to be able to sing whilst playing so he traded it for an acoustic guitar.
Aged 15 McCartney met John Lennon and his band, the Quarrymen where he eventually developed a working relationship with Lennon and together with his other school mates Harrison and Stuart Sutcliffe they later became known as the Beatles.
As a co-writer for the Beatles, McCartney together with Lennon wrote several of their early hits such as “I Saw Her Standing There”, Can’t Buy Me Love”, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You”.
After the breaking up of the Beatles in 1970, McCartney then set out as a solo artist releasing his first album, McCartney which rose to become a US number one album.
Later in 1971 McCartney together with former guitarist for Moody Blues, Denny Laine and Seiwell to form the band known as Wings.
In 1982, he collaborated with Stevie Wonder to record Ebony and Ivory which was produced by Martin and eventually became a number one hit.
This track ended up being his record 28th single to peak number one on the Billboard 100.
Following his 80th birthday in June 2022, McCartney will be performing on the pyramid stage on 25 June making him the oldest participant at the festival having last appeared in 2004.
