Marylin Milian, Sofia Elena Schlesinger’s mother, was appointed as an assistant state attorney for the Dade County State Attorney’s Office by Janet Reno, the county’s state attorney at the time.

She then went on to work at the Miami County Court, where she spent ten years working in the domestic violence, criminal, and civil divisions. Milian was appointed to the Miami Circuit Court in 1999 by Florida Governor Jeb Bush, where she worked in the Criminal Division.

In 2001, she succeeded Jerry Sheindlin as judge of The People’s Court, making her the first Hispanic judge on any English-language television court show. As an adjunct faculty member at the University of Miami School of Law, Milian teaches litigation techniques.

Milian is married to John Schlesinger, a former US attorney who was elected to the 11th Judicial Circuit Court for Miami-Dade County, Florida in 2004, the same position Milian held before joining The People’s Court. They live in Coral Gables, Florida, with their three children, Sofia Elena included. Sofia Elena Schlesinger’s mother visits Stamford, Connecticut, every two months to tape three days of The People’s Court.

Milian is the spokesman for the FBI’s Safe Online Surfing (FBI-SOS) initiative. On the daytime version of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? In 2019, she won $5,000 for Camp Fiesta, a Florida summer camp that is free for children with cancer.
