News circulating in the country right now has it that wearing of Smock has been banned at Bawku in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
This news appears to be quite sad for residents and people who hail from Bawku on this unfortunate decision.
Before we dive into the whole story, let’s take a swipe at the meaning of a smock.
What is a Smock?
A Smock is a traditional and cultural plaid Shirt in Ghana which which originated from the northern part of Ghana. It is most adored by all Ghanaians but mostly patronized by the people in the north in almost everything they do.
It is indeed a nice and fashionable costume. It is usually worn by kings in the northern regions but is now popular across Ghana to the extent where everyone wears it. The Smock in Ghana is usually referred to as “Fugu” or “Batakari”
Why has banning of Smock become a bad news for people in Bawku
Banning of Smock is indeed not great to hear and alarming because of its cultural integrity not only with the people from the north, but with all Ghanaians.
Why is wearing of Smock Banned in Bawku?
According to the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, wearing of Smock currently is banned in Bawku to prevent criminals from concealing weapons in them to harm other people.
This means that some bad people within or around the vicinity of Bawku are fund of hiding arms and ammunition in smocks which to attack residents.
Due to the nature of the Smock, hiding weapons in it is bonus so the bad persons use that to their advantage.
The Council then asked MUSEC to ensure that the directive is well enforced.

There’s currently a curfew on some communities at Bawku due to the growing threat of insecurity at the said area.
