The National president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Nigeria, has lamented over how small countries like Ghana and others are admitting students from the Nigerian court.
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, who’s leading the forefront in the union’s back and forth with the Federal Government to provide enabling environment for tertiary education made this statement in an interview where the union rejected a proposed support levy from parents.
“We can’t be calling ourselves the giant of Africa and we are the worst in education. You see students from Nigeria going to Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo, and other small countries to study but nobody from these countries is coming to Nigeria to study.”
However, in response to the proposed levy on Thursday, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the national president of ASUU, said the parents should take action by joining the organization in stepping up pressure on the top government.
“I think what this association should be doing is to tell the government to perform its function. They should put pressure on the government to use Nigerians’ money to fund education as it is done in other countries.
“In order to ensure that the government prioritizes education, they should increase the pressure being applied by ASUU. The N10,000 is less significant than that.”
In order to address the ongoing ASUU strike, the National Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria proposed the support levy and requested a meeting with the administration.
“We’ve written to the Office of the Minister of Education asking to speak with someone so we may discuss a proposal.
“We are suggesting a monthly payment to the universities of N10,000 per parent, paid directly. In addition to other statutory payments, that will be our own contribution to increasing the amount of money available to the universities.
“The phrase “parent support levy for universities” is appropriate. We are experiencing the effects of the strike. We beg the ASUU and the Federal Government to settle their concerns right away. Dr. Ademola Ekundayo, the NAPTAN Public Relations Officer, revealed this in an interview.
