Majority Leader Gets E-levy Birthday Cake (Photos)

Recent photos trending on social media has it that the Majority Leader of Parliament has received an E-levy Birthday Cake on his 65th birthday.

Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, The Majority Leader of Parliament on his 65th birthday had a cake in the controversial E-levy form.

Majority leader and Member of Parliament for the people of Suame in the Ashanti Region got an E-levy cake to mark his birthday.

Ghanaians have expressed worry that it was out of place to make an E-levy cake as the issue is a sensitive national issue.

Wading into the matter is the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. His response is occasioned by people who are alleging the Minority Caucus in Parliament as a kind gesture, presented the E-levy cake to their colleague on the other side.

He said, “NPP spin doctors and desperate propagandists should leave the NDC caucus in Parliament out of the gross insensitivity and scornful disregard of the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians.  How can we present an E-levy cake to a party we were not invited to and know nothing about?

Sections of citizens have descended on the the Majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu for the “E-cake” as a netizen describes the cake. Others signed their displeasure saying it is mocking and an insult to the good people of Ghana.

“The way they have sliced the cake is exactly how they will share proceeds from the E-levy, ” Dzifa Gunu added.

In attendance at the party were the Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and wife, Samira Bawumia, Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei and other stalwarts of the NPP.

E-levy

Electronic Transaction Levy is a tax imposed on transactions made on electronic or digital platforms. On 17th November, 2021, Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta hinted Government’s plan to levy all electronic transactions in the 2022 budget.  The controversies surrounding the tax has stalled Government’s chance to push through the tax policy.
