A study conducted by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in 2021 has shown the list of the most corrupt institutions in Ghana for the year 2021.
According to research undertaken by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in 2021, the Lands Commission was the most corrupt government agency in Ghana that year.
The findings revealed that among public officials in Ghana, Lands Commission personnel took the largest number of bribes.
The survey found that officials at the Lands Commission, an entity under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resource, accept cash bribes with an average bribe amount of GHC 1,669.
The Lands Commission is followed by the legal system, where prosecutors, justices, and magistrates take bribes with an average value of GHC 1,204.
At an average of GHC 950, officers with the Ghana Immigration Service ranked third on the list of the most corrupt institutions in Ghana 2021.
Officials from the Passport Agency ranked sixth, followed by those from the GRA – customs, the GRA – teachers, lecturers, and professors in seventh, the GRA – public utility officials in eighth, the GRA – doctors, nurses, and midwives in ninth, and the GRA – Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority in tenth.
Ranking in at number twelve is Ghana’s Police Service.
The poll also found that between 70% and 97% of the public services provided by these institutions involved either bribery or the request for bribery.
To add insult to injury, the Oti Region had the highest rate of bribe requests (91%), followed by the Northern Region (89%), the Upper East (83.4%), the North East (81.2%), the Upper West (80.3%), and finally the Ashanti Region (70.4%).
