Ghana ranks 69 in Global Passport Index, Nigeria moves down nine places.
According to the rankings, passports of the world were ranked by their total mobility scores.
Ghana, the West African nation ranked 69th in the 2022 Global Passport Index and has a world reach of 36%. But in Africa, the nation placed 12th, sharing the position with the likes of Gambia, Tanzania, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Despite being a small island nation, Seychelles has Africa’s most powerful passport.
Nigeria, on the other hand, placed 86th globally, 27th in Africa with the Dem. Republic of Congo.
Cape Verde, Gambia and Ghana, in that order are the countries with the most powerful passports in West Africa currently. Cape Verde’s passport will allow VISA-free access to some 36 countries, VISA on arrival to 39 countries and a mandatory VISA requirement to 123 countries on the globe.
With a mobility score of 72, Holders of the Ghanaian passport have VISA-free entry to 40 countries on the globe, VISA on arrival to 36 countries and a mandatory VISA requirement to 126 countries per the 2022 Passport Index. Ranking as one of Africa’s worst passports, Nigeria has VISA-free access to 24 countries only with a mobility score of 55.
It is noteworthy that Ghana performed better in the World’s Openness Score too, while Nigeria trailed behind.
World’s Powerful Passport
According to the index, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) tops the league with a mobility score of 180, VISA-free access to 121 countries and a VISA on arrival to 59 countries.
Following the UAE are Germany, Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria and others.
Afghanistan ranked poorly in the overall ranking with a score of 38.
