Following the latest rankings by renowned U.S News and World Report, some members of the academic community and the public seemed mixed up. They seem to be all Greek to the fresh development. One area of interest for both students and alumni is which university is the best. Many have taken their time to digest the content of the ranking, especially those who missed the roll of honor.
This is the reason why KNUST ranked as 12th best in Africa, despite UCC’s 1st spot, let’s get to know the details.
On the back of the U.S News and World Reports Global Universities Rankings, which ranked the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) as the best in Ghana, students especially have questioned the credibility of the data.
They question the authenticity of the latest rankings on account of an earlier publication that placed the University of Cape Coast (UCC), as the best in Ghana and, surprisingly among the top five on the continent.
The rankings placed the University of Cape Coast, otherwise known as the University of Competitive Choice, as the best in Ghana and on the sub-continent, West Africa. So it comes as a surprise to have rankings that conflict with the above.
However, there are two distinct entities responsible for KNUST’s rankings and that of UCC’s. While KNUST’s rankings were done by the U.S News and World Reports, Times Higher Education handled that of UCC’s.
This makes sense why the two rankings conflict with each other. But whether U.S News and Report is more credible than Times Higher Education, one cannot really prove since both research institutions have different indicators used to rank universities.
