KNUST Postgraduate Admission Requirements 2021/2022

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) postgraduate admission requirements for the 2021/2022 academic year has been published.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission to research and higher degree programmes (MSc/MEd/March/MFA/MA/ MCOMM/MBA/MPA/MPH/LLM/MPHIL/PhD/EDD)

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Masters Programmes

At the time of application, applicants should possess Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent from a recognised Institution in the relevant field of study. Preference will be given to applicants with FIRST CLASS OR SECOND CLASS (UPPER DIVISION)

PhD Programmes

Candidates applying for Doctor of Philosophy degree must have an MPhil degree or its equivalent from a recognised Institution and shall submit evidence of adequate training and ability to undertake the proposed programme.

PROGRAMME DURATION

Unless otherwise stated,

  • Masters Programmes (Full-Time) are of Two (2) Academic Years and (Part-Time) Three (3) Academic Years duration.
  • PhD Programmes (Full-Time) are of Four (4) Academic Years and (Part- Time) are of Five (5) Academic Years duration.

A. COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE

1. Department of Animal Science

  1. Mphil. Animal Breeding and Genetics

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) in Agriculture or related disciplines from any recognised University. Candidates with Second Class (Lower Division) would be required to pass a selection interview.

1. MSc. Agribusiness Management

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) in Agribusiness Management, Business Administration, Agriculture and relevant subject areas from an approved University or Institution of Higher Learning. Relevant academic, administrative or field experience will be an advantage but not a prerequisite. Candidates must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department and demonstrate their ability to pay required fees.

ii. MSc. Agricultural Extension and Development Communication

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in Agriculture or relevant subject areas (Natural Resources Management, Rural Development, Development Planning, Development Studies, Environmental Management, Sociology, Psychology) from an approved University or Institution of Higher Learning. Relevant academic, administrative or field experience will be an advantage but not a prerequisite. Candidates must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department and demonstrate their ability to pay required fees.

iii. MPhil. Agribusiness Management

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) in Agribusiness Management, Business Administration, Agriculture and relevant subject areas from an approved University or Institution of Higher Learning. Relevant academic, administrative or field experience will be an advantage but not a prerequisite. Candidates must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department and demonstrate their ability to pay required fees.

iv. MPhil. Agricultural Economics

Candidates must have Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Art (BA) degree (Minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) or its equivalent in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Economics or other related disciplines from a recognised University. Candidates must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department and demonstrate their ability to pay the required fees.

v. MPhil. Sustainable and Integrated Rural Development in Africa

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) or its equivalent qualification in Sustainable and Rural Development, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Management, Agriculture, Planning, Land Economy, Law, Health, Business, Social and Natural Sciences from recognised institutions. Candidates must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department and demonstrate their ability to pay required fees.

vi. MPhil. Agricultural Extension and Development Communication

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (Minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in Agriculture or relevant subject areas (Natural Resources Management, Sociology, Psychology) from recognised University or Institution of Higher Learning. Relevant academic, administrative or field experience will be an advantage but not a prerequisite. Candidates must pass a selection interview and demonstrate the ability to pay required fees.

vii. PhD. Agribusiness Management

Candidates must have an MPhil degree in Agribusiness Management or equivalent qualifications from a recognised University or Institution of Higher Learning. Candidates must pass a selection interview and demonstrate their ability to pay the required fees. Other MSc/MPhil or equivalent degree holders in relevant subject areas (Agriculture, Natural Resources Management, Rural Development, Economics, Development Planning, Development Studies) from any accredited institution may be required to take relevant courses from the MSc/MPhil Agribusiness programme as may be prescribed by the Department.

viii. PhD. Agricultural Extension and Development Communication

Candidates must have an MPhil degree in Agricultural Extension and Development Communication or equivalent qualification from recognised University or Institution of Higher Learning. Candidates must pass a selection interview and demonstrate the ability to pay required fees. Other MPhil or equivalent degree holders in relevant subject areas (Agriculture, Natural Resources Management, Rural Development, Development Planning, Development Studies, Environmental Management, Sociology, Psychology) may be required to take relevant courses from the MSc/MPhil programmes as may be prescribed by the Department.

ix. PhD Agricultural Economics

Candidates must have an MSc/MPhil degree in Agriculture or relevant subject areas from a recognised University or Institution of Higher Learning. Candidates must pass a selection interview and demonstrate the ability to pay required fees.

Department of Crop and Soil Sciences

Candidates must have a Master’s degree or its equivalent in the relevant field of study, including Horticulture, Agronomy, Biological/ Environmental Science, Postharvest Technology, Food Science, Biochemistry or related disciplines from any recognised University and shall submit evidence of adequate training and ability to undertake proposed programme.

Candidates with degrees in Architecture, Planning, Geography, Fine Art, Civil Engineering and Building Technology may also be considered for programmes in Landscape Studies only.

B FACULTY OF RENEWABLE NATURAL RESOURCES

1. Department of Wildlife and Range Management

  • MPhil. Wildlife and Range Management
  • MSc. Geo-Information Science for Natural Resources Management

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) or equivalent from an accredited university in a discipline related to the course, preferably combined with relevant work experience. Candidates must also attend and pass a selection interview.

  • PhD. Wildlife and Range Management

Candidates must have a Master’s Degree in Wildlife and Range Management, Forestry, Natural Resources Management and other related disciplines. Candidates must also attend and pass a selection interview.

2. Department of Silviculture and Forest Management

  • MPhil. Natural Resources and Environmental Governance

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) in Natural Resources Management, Environmental Management, Agriculture, Engineering, Planning, Land Economy, Law, Business, Social or Natural Sciences. Candidates with Second Class (Lower Division) and some work experience may be admitted after a selection interview.

  • MPhil. Silviculture and Forest Management

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) in Natural Resources Management, Agriculture or Natural Sciences.

  • PhD. Silviculture and Forest Management

Candidates must have a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division) in their Bachelor’s degree, plus a good Master’s degree in Natural Resources Management, Environmental Management, Agriculture, Land Economy, Law, Business, Social or Natural Sciences. Candidates with Second Class (Lower Division) and a good Master’s degree in addition to some work experience may be admitted after a selection interview.

3. Department of Agroforestry

  • MPhil. Agroforestry

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (Minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in Natural Resources Management, Agriculture or Biological Sciences. Graduates in other disciplines with relevant field experience shall also be considered for admission. In addition, candidates will be required to attend and pass a selection interview before admission.

  • PhD. Agroforestry

Candidates must have an MPhil degree in Agroforestry, Natural Resources Management or related field of study with appropriate field experience. Candidates will be required to take relevant courses during the programme. In addition, candidates will be required to attend and pass a selection interview before admission.

4. Department of Wood Science and Technology Management

  • MSc. Packaging Technology and Management

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree in Science, Social Sciences, Art or Business Administration.

  • MPhil. Wood Science and Technology

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree in Science related fields.

  • PhD. Wood Science and Technology

Candidates must have an MSc/MPhil in Wood Science, Wood Technology or Wood Technology and Management.

5. Department of Fisheries and Watershed Management

  • MPhil. Aquaculture and Environment
  • MPhil. Fisheries Management
  • MPhil. Watershed Management
  • PhD. Aquaculture and Environment

Candidates must have a degree in any of the following fields: fisheries sciences, natural resource management, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, biological and physical sciences, or any related discipline. Candidates must include in the application a 1-2 page(s) statement of purpose/motivation outlining career goals and research interests. Candidates must have a good record of academic achievements in a subject or subjects that provide an appropriate academic background. Applications are not restricted to candidates with degrees in sciences, all candidates shall be considered individually. Applications from mature candidates shall be considered on individual basis.

B. COLLEGE OF ART AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT

FACULTY OF BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Department of Architecture

i. MSc. Architecture (Top-up) One Year

Candidates who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma (or higher) in Architecture and related fields of study from accredited/government recognised university will be admitted into the programme upon recommendation by the Departmental Board.

Candidates must demonstrate relevant experience as well as the capacity for undertaking advanced academic study with at least an Undergraduate and Postgraduate cumulative weighted average in architectural (or related fields ) studies of at least 60.

Two letters of recommendation from three previous faculties and/or members of the profession. Portfolio of architectural studies (or related fields) works.

In addition to these requirements, all applicants must pass a selection interview by a panel from the Departmental Board.

ii. MArch (Master of Architecture)

Candidates must have Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) from any accredited/recognised university. Candidates with Second Class (Lower Division) would be interviewed to ascertain their suitability for the programme. If they do not pass the interview, they would be attached to a recognized architectural firm for a year before being admitted for the programme. This year of attachment would be integrated into the candidate’s National Service period.

Candidates who obtain only a Pass would automatically be made to go out for a year attachment/National Service before being allowed into the M. Arch programme.

iii.  MPhil Architectural Studies – Two Years

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in Architecture from a recognised university. Candidates must have a one year relevant industrial or research experience and must show strong research abilities. Candidates must submit a research proposal of 3,000 to 5,000 words as part of the admission requirements.

i. PhD. Architecture

Candidates must have an MPhil, MArch or MSc Architecture, Master of Arts graduates and Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture holders following initial registration on an MPhil Architecture programme may be considered for admission. Research in the fields of Engineering, Sciences or Humanities with connection to Architecture is admissible, subject to approval by the Departmental Board.

Candidates must have a minimum of two years relevant industrial or research experience and must submit a research proposal of 3,000 to 5,000 words as part of the admission requirements.

Department of Construction Technology and Management

  1. MSc. Construction Management (One Year)
  2. MPhil. Construction Management

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in Building Technology, Post-graduate diploma (PGD) in Architecture, Construction Technology and Management, Quantity Surveying and Construction Economics or Civil Engineering. Candidates with Architecture background must have obtained a PGD or MSc in Architecture or a registered qualification in Architecture. Candidates must attend and pass a selection interview. Candidates must submit a sustainable proposal and workable programme that fit into the construction industry. Candidates applying for the MPhil will be admitted in the MSc. Construction Management programme in the first year and may be upgraded to the MPhil in the second year after a satisfactory performance.

  • MSc. Procurement Management (One Year)
  • Mphil. Procurement Management

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in any field/discipline. Candidates must attend and pass a selection interview. Candidates must submit a sustainable proposal and workable programme that fit into the construction industry. Candidates applying for the MPhil will be admitted in the MSc. Procurement Management programme in the first year and may be upgraded to the MPhil in the second year after a satisfactory performance.

  • MSc. Project Management (One Year)
  • MPhil. Project Management

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in any field/discipline. Candidates must have a minimum of two years relevant industrial or research experience. Candidates must attend and pass a selection interview. Candidates must submit a researchable thesis proposal and workable programme. Candidates applying for the MPhil will be admitted in the MSc. Project Management programme in the first year and may be upgraded to the MPhil in the second year after a satisfactory performance.

PhD. Building Technology

Candidates must have a Master’s degree or its equivalent from a recognised institution in Architecture, Building Technology, Quantity Surveying and Construction Technology and management, and Civil Engineering. Candidates with two-year Master’s degree in Construction Management are admissible. Candidates shall demonstrate sufficient ability to undertake the programme. Candidates must have a minimum of two years relevant industrial or research experience. Candidates must attend and pass a selection interview. Candidates must submit a sustainable research proposal and workable programme.

PhD. Construction Management

Candidates must have a Master’s degree or its equivalent from a recognised institution in Architecture, Building Technology, Quantity Surveying and Construction Technology and management, and Civil Engineering. Candidates with two-year Master’s degree in Construction Management are admissible. Candidates shall demonstrate sufficient ability to undertake the programme. Candidates must attend and pass a selection interview. Candidates must submit a sustainable research proposal and workable programme.

Department of Planning

  1. MSc. Development Planning and Management (Accra and Kumasi Centres – Weekend))
  2. MPhil. Development Planning and Management (Accra and Kumasi Centres – Weekend))

The MSc. is for twelve (12) calendar months, within which students who pass all required courses and are supervised to prepare and submit a dissertation, will be awarded a Master of Science degree in Development Planning and Management.

Candidates who obtain CWA of 70% or more at the end of the first year may progress as MPhil. Development Planning and Management candidates for the second year. Such candidates would spend the second

academic year writing their theses and attending relevant seminars. The MPhil thesis will be an upgrade of their MSc dissertation and should be submitted by the end of the second year.

Applicants who have completed the one (1) year MSc. Development Planning and Management programme can be enrolled for one (1) year top-up leading to the award of an MPhil degree after passing a selection interview. Successful applicants would spend the academic year writing their theses and attending relevant seminars. Candidates will be required to generate a researchable topic in relevant thematic areas and complete the thesis at the end of the year.

The MPhil is a two (2) year programme comprising one (1) year of course work and another year of research work. Students are expected to pass all courses before commencing their research work in the second year.

The MSc. and MPhil. Development Planning and Management (SPRING) programmes are opened to Planners, Managers, Administrators and other professionals in development practice and related fields. Applicants must have Bachelor’s degree in the Second Class (Lower Division) or above or its equivalent from recognized institutions in the following programmes:

Planning, Development Studies, Integrated Development Studies, Geography, Environmental Studies, Social Studies, Sociology, Land Economy, Agriculture, Renewable Natural Resources, Economics, Civil Engineering, Business and Public Administration or other relevant programmes.

Applicants with post-graduation experience in industry or research may have an added advantage. All applicants must pass a selection interview before gaining admission.

  • MSc. Development Policy and Planning (Accra and Kumasi Centres – Weekend)
  • MPhil. Development Policy and Planning (Accra and Kumasi Centres – Weekend)

The Master of Science Programme is for twelve (12) calendar months, within which students who pass all required courses and are supervised to prepare and submit a dissertation, will be awarded a Master of Science degree in Development Policy and Planning.

Candidates who obtain CWA of 70% or more at the end of the first year may progress as MPhil Development Policy and Planning candidates for the second year. Such candidates would spend the second academic year writing their theses and attending relevant seminars. The MPhil thesis will be an upgrade of their MSc dissertation and should be submitted by the end of the second year.

Applicants who have completed the one (1) year MSc Development Policy and Planning programme can be enrolled for one (1) year top-up leading to the award of an MPhil degree after passing a selection interview. Successful applicants would spend the academic year writing their theses and attending relevant seminars. Candidates will be required to generate a researchable topic in relevant thematic areas and complete the thesis at the end of the year.

The MPhil Programme is a two (2) year programme comprising one (1) year of course work and another year of research work. Students are expected to pass all courses before commencing their research work in the second year.

The MSc. and MPhil Development Policy and Planning programmes are designed for a wide range of professionals working in areas of development policy and planning in sectorial ministries, budgeting offices, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as well as the private sector. Applicants must have Bachelor’s degree in the Second Class (Lower Division) or above or its equivalent in the following programmes from recognized institutions to apply:

Planning, Development Studies, Integrated Development Studies, Geography, Environmental Studies Social Studies, Sociology, Land Economy, Agriculture, Renewable Natural Resources, Economics, Civil Engineering, Business and Public Administration, and any other relevant programmes.

Candidates with post-graduation experience in industry or research may have an added advantage. All candidates must pass a selection interview before gaining admission.

Candidates who have completed the one (1) year MSc Planning programme can be enrolled for one (1) year top-up leading to the award of an MPhil degree after passing a selection interview. Successful candidates will spend the academic year writing their theses and attending relevant seminars. Candidates will be required to generate a researchable topic in relevant thematic areas and complete the thesis at the end of the year.

The MPhil Programme is a two (2) year programme comprising one (1) year of course work and another year of research work. Applicants are expected to pass all courses before commencing their research work in the second year.

Candidates for the MSc and MPhil Planning programmes must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in Development Planning, Settlement Planning or any other Planning related degree from reputable institutions. Those whose degrees are not in Planning should NOT apply to the MSc and MPhil Planning programmes.

Candidates with post-graduation experience in industry or research may have an added advantage. All candidates must pass a selection interview before gaining admission.

iii. MSc. Transportation Planning (Accra and Kumasi Centres – Weekend)

This MSc. Transportation Planning is a 12-calendar month programme which provides participants with advanced knowledge in transportation planning through a multidisciplinary approach. The programme will provide students with knowledge and skills in: analysis of transportation and land use, design and operation of public transportation systems (including system optimization, simulation and modelling), traffic management, transport governance, operations research, road safety, environmental sustainability, logistics and gender issues in transportation.

The programme targets young and mid-career professionals specializing or seeking to specialize in Transportation Planning. Graduates of the Programme will fit in the Transportation Departments of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs); Transportation Ministries; Private Transport Operator Organizations; Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning and Urban Planning Firms; and Academic and Research Institutions in Ghana and in Africa.

Candidates for the programme must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) or its equivalent, in Planning, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Geography, Architecture, Building Technology, Construction Management, Development Studies and any field of specialization relevant to the programme from a recognized University.

Candidates with B-Tech with at least 2 years’ working experience in the relevant disciplines may be admitted after passing an interview.

Candidates with post-graduation experience in industry or research may have an added advantage. All candidates must pass a selection interview before gaining admission.

  • PhD. Development Studies
  • Ph.D Planning

Candidates for the PhD. Development Studies programme must hold a good Master of Philosophy degree in related disciplines or a relevant Master’s degree from recognized universities. A good master’s degree in the following programmes is required for admission into the programme:

Planning, Development Studies, Integrated Development Studies, Geography, Environmental Studies, Social Studies, Sociology, Local Economic Development, Land Economy, Agriculture, Renewable Natural Resources, Economics, Civil Engineering and any other relevant programmes.

Candidates for the PhD. Planning programme must hold a good Master of Philosophy degree or a relevant Master’s degree in Planning from recognized universities. Those whose degrees are not in Planning should NOT apply to the PhD. Planning programme.

Candidates with post-graduation experience in industry and proven research backgrounds in publications in reputable journals have added advantage.

Upon admission, all students shall undertake a year’s course work which they are expected to pass and obtained a CWA of 55 or above. Having passed all courses and with a CWA of 55 or above, all PhD students are required to take and pass a comprehensive examination administered by the Department.   • Social and Economic Resilience Cluster

This cluster serves to document, analyse and test effective practices in urban resilience in terms of social infrastructure and services accessibility, and economic development, paying special attention to urban sustainable infrastructure services and economic measures, which are critical in improving accessibility for, and wellbeing of, urban dwellers, particularly among the urban poor. Areas of research focus include:

Water and sanitation sustainability; housing demand and supply; resilient cities through smart social service delivery; sustainable economic development; quality of life index and analysis; social and economic infrastructure planning; urban agriculture.

  • Governance, Social Justice and Inequality Cluster

This cluster focuses on analysing and promoting effective governance models, processes and tools to deliver sustainable urban development in line with current global trends (e.g., Sustainable Development Goals; Agenda 2063; Post-disaster recovery). The cluster aims to create an evidence base of practical knowledge for decision making. Areas of research focus include:

Politics and planning; participatory urbanism; fostering partnerships and empowering women; urban safety and security; prevention of urban violence, urban conflict and peace-building; land governance, decentralization; poverty, vulnerability and social inclusion; community participation in urban planning; among others.

  • Climate Transformation and Environmental Sustainability Cluster

This cluster brings together researchers and practitioners interested in how planning and experience shape contemporary climate transformation responses and environmental sustainability regimes. Our research engages with contemporary dilemmas in environmental and climate planning, around issues of:

Urban greenery; natural resource management; tourism studies; reusing, recycling, regenerating materials, producing and using renewable energies; regenerating the cultural heritage/landscape of cities; waste management; climate change adaptation; natural disasters and climate change; flood management; among others.

Centre for Settlements Studies & Department of Planning

  1. MPhil. Urban Management Studies

The programme is open to all applicants but specifically targeted towards directors of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development; Staff of Town and Country Planning Department; Managers of Real Estate Companies; Managers of Waste Management Companies; Lands Commission Staff; Forestry Commission Staff, District, Municipal and Metropolitan Chief Executives; District, Municipal and Metropolitan Coordinating Directors, Planning Officers, Director or Works and Engineers. The programme is open to both regular and weekend applicants.

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree from any recognized university with a minimum of two years work experience from recognized institutions that are in urban related professions. Candidates will also be required to submit a research proposal and when shortlisted for admission would be invited for a selection interview. Candidates from the following backgrounds are eligible to apply: Architecture, Public/Business Administration, Settlement/Development Panning, Civil Engineering, Construction Technology and Management/Quantity Surveying and Construction Economics, Geography, Economics population Studies, Land Economy/Real Estate, Social/Political Science, Sociology/ Psychology, and Development Studies.

  1. MSc. Land Governance and Policy

Candidates must hold Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in Land Economy, Real Estate, Planning, Law, Geomatic/Geodetic Engineering, Geography, Economics, Sociology, Agriculture, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management, Construction Technology Management and other related degree from recognised institutions. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of two years relevant industrial or research experience. All candidates must attend a selection interview and pass the interview before admission.

i.   MSc. Facilities Management

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in Real Estate, Architecture, Building Technology, Business Administration, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Technology and Management, Estate Management, Information Technology, Interior Design, Landscape Design, Land Economy, Law, Planning, Project Management, Quantity Surveying and Construction Economics, Geography, Economics or other related degree from institutions of recognised standing. Applicants with B.Tech qualifications are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of two years relevant industrial or research experience. ii.  PhD. Land Management and Governance

Candidates must have a Master’s degree or its equivalent from a recognised institution in Land Economy, Real Estate, Facilities Management, Planning, Law, Geomatic Engineering, Geography, Economics, Sociology, Agriculture, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management, Urban Management, Development Studies or other related degrees. Candidates must have Bachelor of Art degree in Industrial Art (Metal Product Design Option) or its equivalent with a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division). MFA. Textiles Design

PhD Textile Design Technology

Candidates must have a good two-year research-based masters’ degree in Textile (e.g. MFA/MPhil) or its equivalent from an accredited institution.

MA. Publishing Studies

Candidates must have a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) or its equivalent from a recognised institution of higher learning. Candidates would be required to pass a selection interview and must show evidence of sufficient funds to cover the programme.

Department of Communication Design

MComm. Design

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) in one of the pathway areas in Communication design or design-related programme. Candidates in addition, must have a minimum of two years professional work experience, and further demonstrate the appropriate intellectual, creative and personal qualities to pursue the programme. Candidates must be able to demonstrate, through the submission and review of a portfolio and through a selection interview, a level of knowledge and competence appropriate to the demands of the programme, and to demonstrate the potential to benefit from that study.

MPhil. Communication Design

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) in one of the pathway areas in Communication design or design-related programme. Candidates shall be required to submit a 2- page summary of proposal for which a competent supervisor is readily available. Candidates shall be required to produce a good professional portfolio and pass a selection interview. Candidates shall be selected on the basis of a body of work/proposal that will demonstrate an advanced understanding of the subject/area, sufficient knowledge and technical skill to realise intentions. Candidates shall be required to demonstrate evidence of commitment to the subject; research and intellectual curiosity, critical design-thinking; open-mindedness; the ability to collaborate, to engage in research and debate, and respond communicatively to criticism.

PhD. Visual Communication Design

Candidates must have a good two-year research-based Master’s degree (MFA/MPhil) in any design focused disciplines or its equivalent from an accredited institution. Candidates with three or more years of professional design experience demonstrated by portfolio and testimonials may be considered if the candidate’s Master’s degree is in a related or complementary field. Candidates shall be required to submit a summary of proposal that he/she intends to work on and for which a competent supervisor is readily available. Candidates shall be required to pass a selection interview.

MA. Art Education

Candidates must have a BA, BFA or B.Ed (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) degree in any Visual Arts discipline. Candidates must have at least 60% in Research Methodology and Thesis Writing at the undergraduate level. At least one-year teaching or school administration experience would be an advantage.

MPhil. Art Education

Candidates must have a BA, BFA or B.Ed (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) degree in any Visual Arts discipline. Candidates must have at least 60% in Research Methodology and Thesis Writing at the undergraduate level. Candidates must submit a research proposal on an appropriate topic that is relevant to teaching, learning, and administration of the Arts, Vocational or General Education. Candidates must pass an entrance examination and interview with a minimum of 65%.

MPhil. Art Education (Top-Up)

Candidates must have a MA, MFA, MComm from a recognised university. Candidates must submit a research proposal on an appropriate topic that is relevant to teaching, learning, and administration of the Arts, Vocational or General Education. Candidates must pass an entrance examination and interview with a minimum of 65%.

PhD. Art Education

Candidates must have an MPhil in Fine Art, Art Education or any Visual Arts discipline from a recognized university. Candidates must show evidence of research scholarship: Thesis, Project Report, Journal article or other acceptable publication. Candidates must also submit a comprehensive research proposal on an appropriate topic in any Visual Arts discipline or Arts Administration. Candidates must pass an entrance examination and interview with a minimum of 70%.

Master of Education (M.Ed.) – General Education

Candidates must have a BSc, BA, BFA or B.Ed. (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) degree in an appropriate field of study from a recognised university. Candidates must have a minimum of 60% in Research Methodology and Thesis writing at the undergraduate level. Candidates with at least one year classroom teaching or school administration experience would be at an advantage. A candidate who does not satisfy the requirement stated above but is otherwise adjudged suitable by the Department Board, shall, where practicable, be interviewed and in addition may be required to take an entrance examination as will be determined by the Department Board.

MSc. Educational Innovation and Leadership Science

Candidates must have a BA, BFA or B.Ed. (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) degree in any discipline. MSc/MPhil. Geotechnical Engineering (Accra and Kumasi Centres, Weekend)

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) or its equivalent in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or any field of specialization relevant to the programme from a recognized University.

Candidates with other qualifications shall be interviewed by an admissions committee and, if necessary, may be required to take a written examination before admission. Candidates shall be interviewed and those who have relevant experience, qualification and pass the interview shall be admitted. MSc/MPhil Geotechnical Engineering programmes are MODULAR and the modules will be run during weekends (Saturdays and Sundays).

MSc/MPhil. Structural Engineering (Accra and Kumasi Centres, Weekend)

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) or its equivalent in Civil Engineering, from a recognized University. Admission may be offered to candidates with Second Class (Lower Division) provided they have considerable relevant professional experience. Candidates who do not satisfy the above requirements but is otherwise adjudged suitable by the Departmental Board shall, where applicable be interviewed for admission. Candidates who have a Postgraduate Diploma with substantial professional experience may be considered for admission. Candidates shall be interviewed and those who have relevant experience, qualification and pass the interview will be admitted.

MSc. Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation

Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division)) or its equivalent from a recognised University in Civil or Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or any field of specialisation relevant to the water and sanitation industry. Candidates with other qualifications shall be interviewed and if necessary, may be required to take a written examination before admission. Candidates shall be interviewed and those who have good motivational statement, relevant experience and who pass the interview will be admitted.

PhD. Environmental Sanitation and Waste Management

Candidates must have a good Master’s degree in Water and Sanitation, Civil Engineering (sanitary option), Environmental Engineering, Environmental science/management, Chemical Engineering, chemistry and other relevant physical science disciplines, with a cumulative weighted average of at least 60. Candidates shall be interviewed and those who have good motivational statement, relevant experience and pass the interview will be admitted. Candidates with good research proposal and work experience on the following research themes will receive partial funding from the Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Centre Kumasi (RWESCK):

  • Innovative technology for waste management using Artificial Intelligence and data analytics
  • Waste processing technology to enhance industrial symbiosis and eco-efficiency in circular economy
  • Innovative waste treatment and conversion technology such as waste-to-green energy, waste-to-fertilizers with nutrients amendments, and food waste-to-animal feed
  • Low cost on-site sanitation technologies, thermal treatment and bio-adsorbents for faecal sludge treatment and odour control
  • Remediation of industrial wastewater and artisanal gold mine sites

PhD. Water Resources Engineering and Management

The applicant should pass all courses and attain a minimum CWA of 70 or better and demonstrate the capacity for independent research before they could be considered for admission into the PhD programme. This is a modular programme of two year’s duration and divided into 4 modules. Participants/Students may therefore enrol for programme and terminate their studies after completing one or two modules and obtain a certificate or may continue to complete all four modules and obtain a Master of Philosophy Degree. Participants who wish to obtain a Post Graduate Diploma, a Master of Arts or Master of Philosophy degree must be holders of Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Upper Division or its equivalent)) in Engineering, Science Health and Humanities with some work experience. MPhil. Post-Harvest Technology (Horticulture)

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in Post-Harvest Technology, Agriculture, Agricultural Biotechnology, Natural Resource Management, Biological Sciences and other related sciences.

MPhil/ MSc. Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in Logistics and Supply Chain Management related discipline; OR a good Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with appreciable work experience in Supply Chain, Logistics or Transport Management; OR an international advanced diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management

MSc. Procurement and Supply Chain Management

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in Supply Chain Management; OR A good Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with relevant practical experience in Procurement; OR candidates who are chartered members of CIPS with two years’ work experience.

MSc. Geography and Sustainable Development

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree in any Geography and Development related discipline. Other Candidates with professional qualifications may be considered.

MSc. Accounting and Finance

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in Accounting or Finance; OR a good Bachelor’s degree with option in Accounting e.g. BSc Mathematics with Accounting; OR any other good Bachelor’s degree with Part II qualification from recognised professional accounting bodies such as: ICAG, ACCA, CIMA, etc.

MSc. Actuarial Science

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in Actuarial Science, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering Accounting, Finance, Economics or any programme within the Mathematical Sciences with evidence of Mathematical or quantitative ability.

MSc. Applied Statistics

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in Statistics, Mathematics or a Mathematical-related degree such as Actuarial Science, Economics, Computer Science, etc.

MSc. Environmental Science

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Geography, Culture and Tourism, Natural Resource Management and Agriculture.

MSc. Agribusiness Management

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in Agribusiness Management, Business Administration, Agriculture and relevant subject areas.

MSc. Mechanical Engineering

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or an allied discipline from a recognised University.

MSc. Cyber Security and Digital Forensics

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Telecommunication, Information Systems, Mathematics, Physics, Business Information Technology, Electrical Engineering and other related Science or Engineering background. Candidates with professional qualification and experience in the relevant area may be considered. Candidates in addition may be required to go through background security check with the relevant state agency.

MSc. Environmental Resource Management

Candidates must have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in Mineral Processing, Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Architecture, Agriculture, Renewable Natural Resources and Physical Science.

MEng. Oil and Gas with Management (Mid and Downstream)

Candidates must have a BSc. or B-Tech. degree in Chemical Process and other Engineering disciplines from a recognised University and a minimum of two years work experience.

MEng. Industrial Operations with Management

Candidates must have a BSc. or B-Tech. in Engineering disciplines from a recognised university and a minimum of two years work experience.

MEng. Energy Systems Engineering with Management

Candidates must have a BSc. or B-Tech. degree in Mechanical Engineering or Energy related Engineering disciplines from a recognised university and a minimum of two years work experience.

NB: The Master of Engineering (MEng.) programmes are MODULAR and the modules will be run during weekends. The programme will cover two (2) academic years
