Some Members of Parliament, MPs on Monday, December 20, 2021 exchanged their fists live in Parliament during the voting on the proposed e-levy tax.
There was a fight in the Ghana Parliament, an unfortunate incident quite that happened over e-levy.
What was the cause of fight in Parliament?
The Presiding Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu, had stated that the Bill, which had been tabled under a certificate of urgency, would be approved by a division, and that he would vote in his capacity as a Member of Parliament.
The minority became enraged when the Speaker, Joe Osei-Owusu, attempted to leave the chair to cast his vote on whether the E-levy bill should be taken under the certificate of urgency.
The minority questioned the Speaker’s decision to vote after presiding over the night’s proceedings. They had earlier disagreed with the Speaker’s intention to vote due to a few reasons they put across but the Presiding Speaker decided to vote regardless.
The minority moved upfront to emphasize on their point and this got the majority to move upfront as well.
The fight broke out in Parliament the moment Mr. Osei-Owusu passed over the presiding duty to Andrew Amoako Asiamah, the Second Deputy Speaker.
The Majority MPs decided to defend the Speaker from the Minority MPs who decided to get closer and this caused a lot.
It was indeed an “eyesore” as described by most netizens to see our leaders displaying their fists live to the public.
