The fully funded Mandela Rhodes scholarship in South Africa is currently open. This programme is built on the principles of reconciliation, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership, grounded in the idea that true leadership begins with inner transformation. Inspired by Nelson Mandela’s legacy, the foundation empowers young African leaders with the skills and courage to help build a continent where everyone can thrive.
The programme is delivered mainly through week-long residential workshops, which you will attend during your time in residence.
Eligibility Criteria
You could be a Mandela Rhodes Scholar if you:
- Are a citizen of an African country
- Are aged 19–29 in the year of application
- Will have completed an undergraduate degree by 1 Jan 2027 with excellent results (above 70% or upper-second class)
- Can study at a postgraduate level in English
- Aspire to be an ethical leader, committed to advancing equality, freedom, and human dignity in Africa
- Admire Nelson Mandela’s ability to unite people and bridge divides
- Are ready to reflect deeply on your own leadership and undergo personal growth
- You must state what degree you are planning to study. You do not have to have applied or been accepted, but it is highly recommend that you apply as soon as possible
- Applicants from outside South Africa may need to complete SAQA verification to study at a South African university.
