The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Teachers & Educational Workers’ Union, Ghana (TEWU-GH), and others announce strike action over vehicle maintenance allowance and others. The Unions include UTAG, GAUA, SSA-UoG, and TEWU-GH.
The purpose of this is to request improved working conditions.
According to them, they have no choice but to go on strike because their employer has refused to pay an agreed-upon allowance.
“However, the Employer failed to present the terms of payment for the Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus Allowances, which are the main issues in contention, as directed by the NLC,” the unions said in a press statement issued on Sunday.
They claim the administration has instead proposed setting up a 10-member committee to deal specifically with the Off-Campus Allowance.
“The leaders of the labour unions rejected the ‘suggestion’ and rather pushed for the enforcement of the 2022 adjusted fuel ex-pump rate of GH¢10.99, thus, the meeting ended in a stalemate.
As a result of the development, we write to communicate that the intended strike action of all Labour Unions in the public universities in Ghana is to commence from Monday, 17th October 2022 as the Employer has, once again, failed to adhere to the directive of the NLC.”
After meeting with the National Labour Commission, and as a result, they decided to call off their threatened strike.
The unions claim the government has not lived up to its end of the bargain after the meeting.
