A recluse who was called “the world’s dirtiest man” by the media passed away at age 94, only a few months after getting his first bath in decades.
For over fifty years, Amou Haji avoided using soap and water out of a belief that it would make him ill.
The Iranian, who was from the region of Fars in the country’s south, had evaded prior efforts by the locals to clean him up.
Local media claim, however, that Haji washed a few months ago due to mounting pressure.
Soon after, he fell unwell and died on Sunday, per the Iranian news agency IRNA.
The Life of Haji
Haji told the Tehran Times in 2014 that his favorite food was a porcupine and that he resided in the town of Dejgah between a hole in the ground and a brick shack built by concerned neighbors.
IRNA reported that he had not bathed in years, and that resulted in his skin covered with “soot and pus”. His diet consisted of spoiled meat and water retrieved from an oil can.
He blamed “emotional setbacks” in his childhood for his unconventional preferences, as reported by the source.

According to the news agency, attempts to give him a bath or provide him with clean water reportedly left him feeling depressed or sad.
But it’s been up for question whether or not he holds the record for the longest time someone has gone without a bath.
