China Mall, the Chinese store with locations at Spintex Road and Ashaiman in Greater Accra, has been closed by the GRA’s enforcement team.
The company has been unable to resolve issues with their electronic tax collecting system, thus the GRA is unable to access the data it collects.
Starting on October 1, 2022, the GRA implemented the Electronic VAT system to prevent tax leakage and determine accurate business income.
Joseph Annan, the enforcement manager in Accra Area, said the move is required since the corporation has ignored repeated requests to comply with the law.
The enforcement manager explained that they have engaged them on several occasions to get this simple system fixed.
The recent closedown is just for them to fix their system for the electronic VAT. The place shall be sealed and locked until they comply with the law.
He added that this is part of the Enforcement exercise which they are doing at all the China Mall branches.
The mall’s management found out about what was going on and locked down the establishment before the Enforcement team could get there.
The warehouse staff was protesting at the time.
According to Mr. Annan, the GRA plans to include all China Mall branches in the country in their exercise. From the heat of the matter, the GRA is not going to stop until they get the China Mall management to comply with the law or risk closing the mall down.
