Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has called upon leaders in public and private institutions to avoid using National Service Personnel (NSP) as mere messengers.
In a speech he recently delivered, Bagbin pleads for NSP not to be used just for errand.
He stressed the importance of the national service period, underlining its crucial role in the growth of these individuals. The Speaker emphasized that this time is not for menial tasks.
Mr. Bagbin’s plea came during the launch of the Golden Jubilee anniversary of the National Service Scheme (NSS) in Accra. He focused on the theme, “National Service at 50: Repositioning the Scheme for a Sustainable National Development.”
He expressed concern about instances where institutions often mistreated service personnel, sometimes denying them basic office facilities. The speaker stressed the significance of this period in preparing them for the professional world.

To address the nation’s challenges, Mr. Bagbin emphasized the need for sustainable solutions. He identified NSS as a platform to nurture the next generation of leaders, problem solvers, and agents of change.
After the speech where Bagbin pleads for NSP not to be used as errand boys and girls, he addressed other issues. He stressed the importance of instilling a sense of duty toward the nation in the youth. He emphasized the need for investment in NSS operations.
Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, Executive Director of NSS, highlighted the successful deployment of personnel to bolster the health, education, and civil service sectors. He disclosed that they dispatched approximately 65,000 personnel to classrooms this year.
Regarding the agricultural sector, Mr. Assibey Antwi mentioned that NSS, with the support of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had acquired 20,000 acres of land for various projects.
