The British Army recruitment remains an option for people across the Commonwealth, including applicants from Ghana and other member countries. However, the application situation for Commonwealth residents is currently different from the Army’s general recruitment programme.
Current Status of British Army Commonwealth Recruitment
Status: Closed for Commonwealth residents, except Musician applicants.
As of September 2026, the British Army has not announced a date for reopening applications to other Commonwealth residents. This means applicants cannot assume they can apply for ordinary soldier or officer roles simply because general Army recruitment is open.
Anyone interested in roles other than Musician should wait for an official announcement and avoid paying anyone who claims to have access to a recruitment slot.
Can Commonwealth Citizens Apply to the British Army Now?
For most Commonwealth applicants, no.
The restriction applies specifically to Commonwealth residents applying through the Commonwealth recruitment route. The exception is for Musician applicants.
The Army advises prospective applicants to monitor its official nationality and recruitment information for changes.
Applicants who submitted applications during the 2024 Commonwealth recruitment window should continue to monitor their recruitment portal. The Army says it received an unprecedented volume of applications during that window and is working through them. It also states that applications submitted during the 2024 window without a Recruit Bounty Scheme sponsor will be rejected.
Commonwealth Musician Applications
Candidates from member countries can currently explore the British Army’s Musician route.
The Royal Corps of Army Music has 14 bands performing traditional marching music, jazz, classical and pop. Army Musicians perform at ceremonial events and for the public, soldiers and VIPs, while also serving as soldiers.
How to Apply as a Musician
- Visit the British Army’s official Musician recruitment page and click “Apply now.”
- Create and activate an Army recruitment account, or log in if you already have one.
- Complete the eligibility questions, including your age, nationality and qualifications.
- If the system confirms that you are eligible, complete and submit the available application.
- Being a Commonwealth citizen does not automatically mean you qualify for a Musician position. You must still meet the service’s applicable eligibility and role requirements.
Visa and Immigration Requirements
- Visa Processes: Candidates from member states are responsible for maintaining valid visa and legal status in the UK until they officially join the Army.
- If your visa expires: You may have to return to your home country at your own expense to obtain a new visa before continuing your application.
- After joining: Commonwealth personnel are given “exempt immigration control” status while serving.
- After service: According to Army guidance, you may not have to pay the relevant immigration fee if you have served for six years or more, or if you were discharged because of an illness or injury caused by your service. Those who serve for less than six years may have to pay a fee. The Army recommends applying while still serving because the process is easier.
- British citizenship: Commonwealth personnel who want to become British citizens while serving must meet the relevant Home Office criteria and pay the associated costs. Military service can count towards the required period of residence.
Can Your Family Join You in the UK?
Commonwealth personnel may be able to bring eligible family members to the UK if they meet the applicable immigration conditions.
The criteria includes English-language requirements and currently lists £23,496 as the minimum income requirement for entitled family members.
Because immigration rules and visa fees can change, applicants should check the latest UK Government requirements before making arrangements.

When the British Army opens a new Commonwealth recruitment window, applicants should follow the latest official announcement and eligibility, as these may differ from previous recruitment exercises.
