A Nigerian man, Saheed Azeez, who gained refugee status in the UK by claiming persecution from Boko Haram for being gay, was arrested for orchestrating a £220,000 Facebook and eBay parcel fraud scheme.
Azeez, now admitting to being bisexual, settled in the UK, fathering children with three women.
He collaborated with Nigerian fraudsters, executing a sophisticated scam to steal items from eBay and Facebook Marketplace.
Victims sent goods to addresses expecting payment on arrival, but Azeez, with accomplices, picked up the items, accumulating £220,000.
The police apprehended Azeez while dropping his son off at school, finding incriminating smartphones hidden in the child’s bag.
The devices contained videos showcasing stolen smartphones. Azeez confessed to conspiring to commit fraud and plotting to possess criminal property.
The self-acclaimed gay Nigerian man could face up to six years in jail. His sentencing is imminent.
Nine individuals will also be sentenced next year for allowing their addresses to be used for the scam.
The fraudulent activities occurred between September 2020 and November 2021. Azeez initiated these crimes. He also happens to be a former Yodel delivery driver.
The case underscores the complexity of immigration matters and the potential for abuse within the asylum system.
