How KNUST’s University Hall Came By The Name KATANGA. Many individuals feel Katanga is the name of KNUST’s first all-male hall. The University Hall is the official name of the building, which originally inaugurated on January 19, 1963. The university hall, Katanga Hall, was converted into a mixed hall for the 2018/2019 academic year, amidst violent demonstrations.
Why Katanga
At the time of the hall’s opening, the Congo conflict was at its height. Katanga, a Congolese province, attempted to break away from the newly constituted state. The province claimed it was responsible for more than half of Congo’s income and hence need self-sufficiency. As a result, the building was given the name KATANGA by the University Hall’s inaugural students in celebration of the province’s great mineral wealth. This was an attempt to convey the hall’s diverse resident and graduate population.
However, there has been a long-held misconception that the name Katanga was chosen because of the province’s rebellious nature. This is due to the involvement of a few fellows in scandalous actions on and near the KNUST campus.
Public basic schools to conduct end of term exams for students
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has asked heads of various public basic schools across the country to conduct end-of-term literacy and numeracy assessments for students through Regional Directors of Education.
It issued that English Language and Mathematics should be administered as the end-of-term assessment for government basic school upper primary pupils across the country this academic year.
The assessment for public lower primary and kindergarten pupils should be based on numeracy and literacy, according to a statement signed by Anthony Boateng, the Deputy Director-General of GES and copied to EducationWeb.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has stated that examinations for public Junior High School (JHS) pupils should be centered solely on key courses, including as Mathematics, English Language, Integrated Science, Social Studies, and ICT.
