30% of Ghanaian teachers do not qualify to teach – NTC Director

Dr. Christian Adu Poku, the Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC) has stated that teachers in Ghana, some 30% of them do not qualify to be in the classroom.

He made this statement at the launch of the Private School Teachers’ Continuous Professional Development (PST-CPD). He further said that was the reason his outfit is partnering with private schools to roll out a programme for untrained teachers.

“The materials we are admitting into our Teacher Training Institutions, some of them do not meet the standards, so it is better to get this right at the beginning so that when they come out, they will meet standards,” DR Poku complained.

As part of measures to ensure teachers in Ghana are well trained and professional, National Teaching Council has disclosed plans are underway to train some 2,000 unlicensed private school teachers.

Dr. Poku also added that they will train private school teachers on the best way to deliver content in literacy and numeracy.

“The training will form the basis for pilot training of unqualified teachers to equip them with the best practices on how to teach the best practices on how to teach literacy and numeracy,” he noted.

He, however, acknowledged that there are more untrained teachers who are adept in their content knowledge who need a little pedagogy to be the best.
