The records that Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi can still break

One of them just left the club where he grew up and became a professional, while the other has just rejoined the club that made him a global star. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo may be the wrong side of 30, but they remain top players chasing what few records remain for them to break.

The former Barcelona and Real Madrid players, now both playing outside Spain, have already written pages and pages of football history. They will be remembered eternally for what they have done, but also for what they are yet to accomplish.

What Ronaldo and Messi have achieved so far

League titles, cup trophies, Champions Leagues and even international tournaments, these players have won just about everything they could have on a team level.

As for goals, an area where both excel, Ronaldo this week became the top international goalscorer of all time with 111. Messi, meanwhile, is the top scorer in the history of LaLiga Santander, with 474, and in the Champions League with one team, with 120.

The Portuguese forward, however is the Champions League’s top scorer when looking at all clubs played for, with 134 over his spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

Messi holds the record for most goals in a LaLiga Santander season, with 50, and has won more Pichichi trophies than anyone else, with last year’s his eighth.

What Ronaldo and Messi could still achieve

Ronaldo may already be the top international goalscorer of all time, but Messi could still become the top South American scorer in international football, needing just two strikes to surpass Pele’s record.

The new Manchester United signing, for his part, is two appearances away from being the Champions League’s top appearance maker, a record currently held by Iker Casillas, who has 177. Messi has 149 appearances.

Messi has six Ballon d’Or awards to Ronaldo’s five, while the former Real Madrid man has five Champions Leagues to the Argentine’s four.

In terms of career goals, at club level Ronaldo has 674, leading Messi by two. Curiously, he needs just nine goals to overtake his new head coach and become joint 15th on the Red Devils’ all-time scoring list with 127, but he’d need over 155 to enter the top 10.
