Trent Alexander-Arnold has withdrawn from England’s Euro 2020 squad due to injury.
The Liverpool full-back sustained a thigh problem in the closing stages of Wednesday night’s friendly against Austria.
Alexander-Arnold subsequently underwent a scan on Thursday that confirmed the injury will prevent him from participating in the European Championship, which begins next week.
The 22-year-old will immediately start a rehabilitation programme with a view to returning in pre-season as the Reds prepare for 2021-22.
There was previously doubt over whether he would be in Gareth Southgate’s plans after a less than convincing season with Liverpool and he was controversially one of four right-backs due to go to the competition.
Alexander-Arnold dropping out of the squad means that his place could be taken by one of the players who weren’t included in the final 26-man squad announced by Southgate.
Southgate has said that he won’t name a replacement until after their match against Romania.
