Lucas Vazquez extends his Real Madrid contract until June 2024
Lucas endeared himself to the club and the supporters last year after putting in some stellar displays at right-back in the absence of the injured Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Odriozola.
Unfortunately, the 29-year-old’s season came to a premature end during the Clasico, as he suffered a serious knee injury after a collision with Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets.
That injury, however, was a turning point in the negotiations between Lucas and Real Madrid, as they had previously been far apart in their discussions.
Real Madrid decided to raise their offer to the Galician in order to compete with some of the offers he had received from abroad, with Bayern Munich seemingly in pole position to secure his signature if he decided to leave the Spanish capital. There were offers from Italy, too.
He was keen to stay at Real Madrid
Yet, Lucas always prioritised staying at Real Madrid and now he had received an offer that showed the club’s faith in him, so an agreement was reached not long after.
After joining the club as a 16-year-old in 2007, Lucas came through the club’s youth system and became a regular for Castilla before he joined Espanyol on a season-long loan deal in the 2014/15 campaign.
He impressed in Catalonia so much that Real Madrid deemed him good enough to come back and be a member of the first-team squad.
Lucas has made a total of 240 appearances for the Real Madrid first team, in which he has scored 26 goals and provided 54 assists.
