Man Utd transfer round-up: Pogba swap for Ronaldo, Varane breaks silence

Manchester United chiefs are under pressure to deliver marquee signings after the Red Devils’ season ended in disappointment this week.

Having seen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side fall short in the Europa League final with a dramatic loss on penalties to Villarreal, the need for reinforcements is clearer than ever if United are to challenge for the title next season.

England pair Declan Rice and Jadon Sancho have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, while moves across Europe have also been mooted.

A return for Cristiano Ronaldo has become a huge talking point, while a world-class defensive partner for Harry Maguire is a matter of importance for United.

Here is Sunday’s Manchester United transfer round-up.

Varane breaks his silence

Defensive target Raphael Varane has broken his silence with speculation swirling over his future.

Real Madrid could be set for their own overhaul, with Sergio Ramos likely to leave as his contract expires this year.

But his defensive partner could be joining him out the exit door at the Bernabeu, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2022, meaning they could lose him for nothing in a little over 12 months time.

Amid the rumours about his future, the France centre-back has finally spoken out.

“This is not the time to talk about my future. I am focused on the selection, on this Euro,” he said.

Will we see Ronaldo in a United shirt again? Comment below.

“It is normal and logical to ask the question and for my part, it is normal and logical to focus on the upcoming deadlines.

“We are all human beings. We can think about it. As for my personal case, I am focused on the objectives that we have in the France team, it is not a subject that I will discuss every day in my room at Clairefontaine.

“I am focused on my goal, and now is not the time to discuss it. If I have to talk about it, it will be directly with the people concerned.”

Pogba swap for Ronaldo

There could be a sensational deal between United and Juventus this summer which would see Paul Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo switch clubs.

That’s according to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport, who say Juve are open to offering Ronaldo in an exchange for Pogba.

The Serie A side would also have to put some cash on the table to sweeten the deal.

Solskjaer has admitted that he is very keen to keep Pogba, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid or a return to Juve in the past.

Woodward’s thoughts on summer business

There may not be all that much record-breaking transfer business at Old Trafford this season, despite links for big-name signings.

United vice-chairman Ed Woodward and football director John Murtough, who will oversee the club’s transfer activity, are wary about a high turnover of players in a single window, reports ESPN.

The pair are, however, said to be in agreement over the need to bring in new players this summer.

United are expected to make Borussia Dortmund star Sancho their top target this summer, with the need for a new striker lessened due to Edinson Cavani’s contract extension.
