Rozonda Thomas or still, Rozonda Ociellan Thomas was born on the 27th of February, 1971 in Columbus, United States of America. Her father is Abdul Ali who is of Bengali descent and her mother, Ava Thomas who is an African American. Thomas was raised up single handedly by her mother. Her father was absent in her upbringing. She met her father for the first time in 1996, when she had clocked 25 and had allowed the Sally Jessy Raphael television talk show to air footage of the meeting.
She attended the Seventh-day Adventist Church with her great grandmother whom she lovingly called Big Mama. Thomas has been active since 1991.

Thomas is nicknamed “Chilli’’ and that is her stage name. She was given the name by Lisa Lopes when she had to replace Crystal Jones in the dance group, TLC. She later dated Usher after she starred in his music’s video and broke up after two years citing infidelity on the part of Usher.
Thomas is a great advocate for safe sex and has emabrked on numerous programs to educate people about HIV/AIDS. She started a non for profit organization called Chilli’s Crew.
