The Ghana Black Meteors will be missing Ajax star Mohammed Kudus at the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 22-year-old was born on August 2, 2000, almost missing the Confederation of African Football’s birth date requirement of January 1, 2001.

It has been called into doubt whether or not the Black Stars forward would travel with Ibrahim Tanko’s squad to Morocco in June for the U-23 AFCON.

Although Ibrahim Tanko did not have Kudus on his squad for the Olympic qualification event, he did express interest in adding further quality players.

The GFA’s director of communications, Henry Asante Twum, was hoping that by adding Mohammed Kudus to the Black Meteors squad, Ghana’s chances of making it to the Olympics would be improved. However, Mohammed Kudus does not meet the eligibility requirements for AFCON 2023.

Ghana has made it into the CAF U23 AFCON 2023 that will be held in Morocco between June 24 and July 8.  With a 2-1 victory over Algeria on aggregate, the Black Meteors advanced.

The Black Meteors secured their spot in the AFCON with a 1-0 victory over Algeria in Tuesday’s match at Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

“I think we have a really excellent squad,” Henry Asante Twum remarked on Asempa FM. The tournament will most likely take place after the regular season has concluded.

In order to qualify for the Olympics, “we would need to get all of our U-23 players who are still available, from Kudus to Kamaldeen, Abdul Salis, Afena-Gyan, and all players who play for the Black Stars.”
