A jaw dropping incident in the Bulemi community of the Weija‑Gbawe Municipality in the Greater Accra Region has captured national attention, as a family of three has been reported to be adding faeces and urine to the food she cooks.
On March 20, 2026, Onua TV reporter, Akua Sarpomaa, visited the family to see the situation firsthand. She found that the mother, Leticia Okine, has been using human bodily waste in preparing their meals, claiming it makes the meals “healthier and tastier.” In her own words, Leticia explained: “All the bottles here are filled with urine that we use for cooking and even as pomade. We also use it to remove chemicals from pure water before drinking.”
According to a neighbor, the family has been living in the area for many year but the father left after Leticia started developing certain abnormal behaviors.
The story didn’t go unnoticed. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, visited the family following the media reports. She acted promptly to ensure the family received proper care.
Officials arranged for the family to be taken first to the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital and then to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, where the mother, Leticia Okine, could undergo a thorough mental health assessment. The intervention also focused on the two children, who are currently not attending school. Authorities have taken steps to ensure they are in a safe environment and can return to school once arrangements are made.
The Minister said that helping this family is part of a bigger effort to support and protect vulnerable families, and she thanked the Akua Sarpomaa and Onua TV for shining a light on this situation.
