Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, The Minister of Education, has stated that preparations for colleges of education to be upgraded into universities are well advanced.
Dr. Adutwum made this announcement when the new leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) paid him a courtesy call in Accra. He said the Colleges qualified to be autonomous after operating for 50 to 100 years or even longer.
The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the Minister to the new leaders who were voted to office in January during GNAT’s quadrennial convention in Kumasi.
Speaking on how Colleges of Education are to be Upgraded to Universities, He explained that the decision was made to allow such colleges of education to operate their own programs geared toward the nation’s development and change.
The minister stated that cabinet was debating a document on college upgrades, and noted that once approved, the appropriate steps will be taken accordingly.
He told GNAT’s new leadership that he was ready to continue working with the Association for Educational Development.
Dr. Adutwum praised the country’s teacher unions, particularly GNAT, for their contributions to the country’s educational growth.
He advised them to always use discussion to resolve disputes in order to keep the labor front peaceful.
The minister added that as development partners, they must all consider how they can effectively support the country’s transformation plan, which has the potential to turn around the country’s development.
Dr. Adutwum advised them to use the media to promote development projects rather than to solve problems.
