Accra Mall: Shoprite’s meat section reopened after FDA closure over mislabeling

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has reopened the meat section of Shoprite at the Accra Mall.

The section was closed on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, for thawing frozen imported chicken and selling to unsuspecting customers as fresh chicken.

A Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, Akua Amartey, explained that the company engaged in deception by labeling imported chicken as local chicken.

“Shoprite was given an administrative fine to pay to deter them from repeating such an action”, she indicated.

Speaking after reopening the shop, the Head of Communications and Public Education, Rhoda Awurabena Appiah, said “information reaching me from the department indicates that they have made payment of the administrative fine.”

“Their capacities have also been built on how to better handle meat products. There is, therefore, no reason to keep them under any sanction.”

Madam Awurabena Appiah also noted that the management of Shoprite Ghana has been cautioned to stick to the laid down protocols of food safety in line with the Public Health Act.

“We have asked them to reopen the meat section, but with very close monitoring from the FDA. We have given them strict protocols to follow. We are going to keep an eye on them for some time.”
