The Commonwealth Secretariat is inviting qualified candidates from Commonwealth countries to apply for the position of Adviser Climate Change within its Climate Change and Oceans Division.

Salary: £80,672 per annum + benefits
About the Role
The successful candidate will support the Commonwealth Climate Change Programme, which helps small and vulnerable states strengthen climate resilience, reduce climate risks, and transition to clean energy.
The role involves technical and policy support, programme implementation, capacity building, research, and stakeholder engagement across climate-related initiatives. Local and international travel will also be required.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic technical leadership in climate change, oceans, biodiversity, energy, and natural resource management
- Support Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Least Developed Countries (LDCs), and vulnerable countries in strengthening climate resilience
- Advise member states on implementing international climate agreements including UNFCCC, UNCBD, and UNCCD
- Support climate adaptation and mitigation projects linked to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), and related frameworks
- Conduct research and intelligence gathering on climate and environmental issues
- Help increase awareness and visibility of the Commonwealth Secretariat’s climate work
- Contribute to work planning, budgeting, programme monitoring, and reporting
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must have:
- A postgraduate degree (MSc) in Climate Change, Environmental Studies, or a related field
- At least 10 years of relevant experience in climate adaptation and mitigation programmes or projects
- Experience working within regional or international institutions, research organisations, or consultancies
- Demonstrated expertise in climate change issues affecting Small States and Least Developed Countries
- Additional specialization in ecologically focused climate adaptation, carbon management, or climate change policy will be an advantage.
