All final year Senior High School (SHS) students who have tested positive for the locally transmitted coronavirus and are asymptomatic will write WASSCE, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum stated ahead of last year’s WAEC examination.
Adutwum, who was the then Deputy Education Minister but currently the Minister for Education in an interview, said such candidates will write the exams except that the person is so ill.
“Asymptomatic students will be given a different place to write the exams and for those who are very ill and won’t be able to take part in the exams. Today is elective and this is tactical. It is not every school that is writing today’s exams.”
He urged parents not to panic if their wards are in isolation adding that WAEC and schools long before the presence of the novel coronavirus have measures put in place to address issues of candidates who are critically ill.
“There are special forms we fill for students who for some reason can’t write the paper. So those are no issues we should worry too much about. Perhaps we have to let parents know it’s not going to affect their future too much.”
Deputy Education Minister, Gifty Twum Ampofo also stated infected candidates will be writing their examination in isolation under strict Covid protocols. She added those who are critically ill will be exempted from writing the exams.
The Ministry of Education (MoE) this year is yet to communicate measures being put in place to ensure candidates who will from Monday, August 16, 2021 sit for the international examination are safe from the deadly virus.
