Remain at post – NABCo secretariat tells trainees

nabco application

The Nation Builders Corps Secretariat, NABco, has asked trainees to remain at Post.

The decision, it stated, was issued following a high-level conference with implementation partners led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Opare.

The latest instruction represents a significant U-turn after NABCO’s National Coordinator, Dr. Ibrahim Anyars, declared that the trainees’ three-year contract will not be extended.

He even outlined the program’s exit strategy for trainees.

But in the new notice to the trainees dated November 15, 2021, the NABCO secretariat said, “following a high-level Stakeholder meeting with the lead NABCO Module Implementation Partners (MIPs) led by His Excellency the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana and The Honourable Chief of Staff, all NABCO trainees are required to remain at post.”

It is unclear for how long the trainees are expected to remain at post, but the statement said it will be until “permanent arrangements” are made.

The statement said, NABCO Secretariat expects trainees to continue to discharge their duties diligently and professionally at their various workplaces whilst the scheme and the MIPs work towards a smooth final transition.”

Meanwhile, according to the announcement, a new batch of NABCO trainees will be recruited in 2022.

Commissioning of NABCO Recruits

President Nana Akufo-Addo in October 2018 commissioned 100,000 beneficiaries under NABCO modules which include Feed Ghana, Educate Ghana, Revenue Ghana, Heal Ghana, Enterprise Ghana, Digitise Ghana and Governance Ghana.

The programme was introduced as a stopgap measure to address the issue of unemployment in Ghana.

ABOUT NABCO

The Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) programme is a government initiative to address graduate unemployment to solve social problems. The focus of the initiative will be solving public service delivery in health, education, agriculture, technology, governance and drive revenue mobilization and collection.

This new scheme – the Nation Builders Corps recognizes the role played by other pathways that currently exist under various government institutions and agencies. In a sense, NABCO ultimately offers a convergence for the employment initiatives landscape. Among the existing Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) with schemes addressed to youth unemployment include: the Ministry for Business Development, Ministry for Local Government and Rural Administration, the National Vocational and Technical Institute (NVTI), Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), the National Youth Authority (NYA), and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), and the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP) to cite some examples. In particular, the YEA has affected, positively, the lives of many non-tertiary graduates through the innovative modules that have continued to engage lots of young people. In the case of the NABCO, the distinguishing element would be its concentration on addressing the growing phenomenon of unemployment and disillusionment among young people leaving tertiary institutions

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Provide temporary employment to unemployed graduates
  • Improve skills and employability for the transition from programme to permanent employment
  •  Improve public service delivery
  •  Improve on government revenue mobilization
  • To provide needed infrastructure to improve access to basic public services
