Northerners are only fit to be running mates - Hopeson Adorye
Latest to whip up tribal sentiments is NPP’s Hopeson Adorye, who believes running mates slot in the NPP are the sole inheritance of our brothers up north.

A vocal member of the ruling New Patriotic Party and the 2020 Parliamentary candidate for Kpone-Katamanso, Hopeson Adorye has stated unequivocally that northerners are only fit to be running mates.

During a weekend keep-fit walk in support of Alan Kyeremanteng, Hopeson Adorye made some inflammatory comments.

According to him, the NPP’s vice-presidential position is automatically filled by Northerners, while the presidential position alternates between the Danquah and Busia lineages.

“Whenever a Danquah leads the party, the Busia side steps aside but there is a Dombo (for running mate), and whenever a Busia lead, the Danquah side steps aside but there is a Dombo (for running mate). As for the Dombos they are always there (for running mate).

“If it went to Danquah, came to Busia, went back to Danquah, where should it go now, is it not Busia?” Adorye quizzed.

The NPP man has come under heavy backlash after making this disparaging remarks. The likes of Frank Annoh-Dompreh and Farouk Aliu Mahama has asked Hopeson to retract over such unfortunate comments.

The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh called on the Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyeremanteng to call his supporters to order.

He advised the Minister to specifically summon the party’s outspoken Hopeson Adorye to order.

The MP tweeted on Sunday, “Chief Alan Kyerematen should urgently ask his Director of Operations, Hopeson, to immediately repudiate his terrible comment” (14 August).

“Let’s conduct a civil and clean campaign. We have a lovely party with a respected tradition.”

Farouk Aliu Mahama, the member of parliament for Yendi, also demanded that Hopeson Adorye, a member of the NPP, be completely denounced for his recent remarks.

The statement made by Adorye that Northerners cannot serve as the NPP’s flagbearers is completely unjustified, in Hon. Mahama’s opinion, and should be condemned.

According to him, these principles have helped the Busia-Dombo heritage weather all political conflicts and persecutions during the period leading up to and following independence, and transform into what it is now.

The NPP is the only political party where the son of a “koko” vendor from Yendi’s remote hinterland can become both his party’s running mate and the vice president of his nation. Our tradition endures because of its doctrine.
