Due to the dire status of the Ghanaian economy, some Ghanaians have requested that the President remove the Minister from his position.
President Akufo Addo insists he will keep the Finance Minister despite Ghana’s need for assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to keep the economy afloat.
The request that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo sack Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been dismissed.
Speaking on OTEC FM on Monday, President Akufo-Addo declared that the Minister, who is his cousin, had his complete trust.
Despite many calls for the Minister of Finance’s head, amid a heated national economic crisis, Nana Addo has refused to ask Ofori-Atta (Finance Minister) to step down, citing he has no reason to sack Ofori-Atta.
I came to office in 2017 under a stringent IMF programme. This same man was able to manage the affairs of our economy in such a way that in my first term, we were one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
“An average growth rate of 7% which allowed us to initiate programmes such as Planting for Food and Jobs. So somebody who has been able to do that. The current difficulties are not his fault. So how do I do it (sack him)? What will be the basis? What will be the rationale.”
“If we were to say he didn’t do well in the first term, then why did I renominate him for my second term? So for me, their performance my first time was excellent. Let me use that word. Excellent,” he added as quoted by a source.
Meanwhile,Kwasi Alfred Addo Kwarteng, a British Conservative Party official with Ghanaian ancestry who was ousted as the country’s minister of finance, and whose sacking has awakened Ghanaians on why Ofori-Atta is still in office, has received comfort from Ken Ofori-Atta.
“The pain or sadness is that he is a Ghanaian reaching almost the highest level, Chancellor of the Exchequer. Yes, we sat together three days ago.
“I am always very optimistic, if one is really doing things in truth there might be some waves but the Lord will see him through. I was surprised at what happened. I have sent an email to him, I told him the Lord knows best,” he told TV3.
