  • I do music for the people, not awards – Kofi Kinaata
  • Ghanaian musician and songwriter cherished by all, Kofi Kinaata has revealed he is more interested in doing music for his fans than he winning awards.
  • He defended his stance by acknowledging the support has fans have always accorded him, and that it is through such support he wins some awards.
  • It is therefore logical to be fixated on fans’ needs than the awards.

Kofi Kinaata, a multiple award-winning singer, thinks he does music for the people, not awards. He believes his followers are more important to him than any award scheme in the country.

Kinaata, who won the Vodafone Ghana Music Award for Best Songwriter for the third time in a row from 2018 to 2021, said his fans’ support has helped him secure all of the honors and partnerships he has received.

He went on to say that he writes songs primarily for his fans and not for the sake of winning accolades. He claimed that award shows are essential but merely celebratory events, even referring to them as artists’ “our day.”

“The fans stream the songs; they are the ones that come to my gigs and pay gate fees; they also generate noise about my songs in order for companies to sign me as an ambassador,” he told Amansan Krakye on Cape Coast’s Kastle FM.

“The fans are the ones for whom we write songs, yet it so happens that those who have released songs in a calendar year should come to our day… So, on our day for artists, we’ll exchange mementos such as this musician received this award and the other did well in this field, so let’s honor them for their achievements.

“That one is a one-day event, but the fans follow you wherever you go to perform every day, so they’re the ones we work for.”

Over the years, Kofi Kinaata has demonstrated his ability to generate top-charting songs. He did, however, underline that he does not work with accolades in mind.

“Today, I want to make it obvious that when I release music, I am not thinking about earning a VGMA award.”
